Great help, makes workign much faster
You'r welcome, Rene. And thank you for your support !
Thanks for the application, very handy.
Any chance of adding Double Commander and Total Commander for the supported file managers?
If yes, you could control them via command-line parameters, see
http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1075&start=10
http://www.ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php/Command_line_parameters#Parameters:
Thank you Roland for the suggestion and the reference. Added to the with-list.
Definitely count me in for Total Commander support!
+1 for Total Commander support.
Noted, Daniel.
@Roland, Geert and Daniel: Total Commander support is now in beta stage! You can learn more and join the beta tests if you wish:
Folders Popup compatible with Total Commander – Beta testers wanted
Thanks, looking forward to it!
(and surely will switch from Direct Folders to Folders Popup)
Greetings, earthling!
Nice software have you made.
But time for changing folders seems to be too short, so explorer have no time to react.
One could select favourite folder several times (up to several dozens of times) and still have no luck in directory change.
May be both 1st and 2nd versions miss keypress? Hard to detect visually. It just displays a needed folder for a blink of an eye, and then returns the filename, yet explorer window stays in the same folder, not a selected one.
Sigh...
Thank you for your comment and remarks. Running FP in diagnostic mode would help find out why it is not working in your environment. I'm out of town for a few weeks. We could reconnect mid-august if you can.
Jean
Affirmative.
Waiting for instructions to start a diagnostic mode. (No clues in readme.txt and on the site).
Send me your email at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca and I'll send you the info when I'm back.
Hello "End User",
It is still time to contact me at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca if you can help diagnose this issue.
Thanks.
I had an email exchange with End User. After testing with v3, he reported that intense testing with several applications did not allow him to reproduce the problem at the moment." Case closed, at the moment :-)
Well ! I have noticed, folderspop is good too for freecommander xe and clover. It is very good work.
Thank you faninatiako. I know the support of these third party can be improved. If you have specific comments using FP with these apps, you can comment here:

Hi Jean
a very helpful program.
The program works good when I are on the desktop, then the mouse wheel works, but when I are on the start menu the mouse don't work. am a bit strange but love the start menu.
Hi Anton,
The Middle Mouse Button (mouse wheel button) works on the desktop, in file Explorer and Shell (cmd.exe) windows. On any other windows, on can Shift-Middle Mouse Button to open the menu. This will also work over the start menu.
Jean
Thank you for the useful software tool!
However, I have two questions:
1) Why does the program create the FoldersPopup-DIAG.txt file? It seems to consist of recent documents, yet I haven't found a feature of the program that uses it.
2) Why does it immediately try to connect to the Internet? I suppose that it is an update feature, yet the program didn't ask at all - not a good policy, methinks.
Thank you for this comment LordDreadfort.
1) This is an bug. This Diag file should be created only when the diagnostic mode is turned on. There is one diagnostic instruction where I forgot to check if diag mode is on. This will be fixed in v3.1.1. Thank you for reporting this.
2) Yes, this call is to check you have the latest version. No info is sent from the PC running the app and there is no impact if the call is blocked or if there is no internet connection. What I like with this is that I can look at my web stats to know how many users are running my app.
Bonjour Jean,
This looks really nice.
It would be especially useful to me at work, given the mess that our network share has become over the years :-)
Unfortunately, our workstations there are severely restricted by an AD gpo : the local disks are mostly read-only, and executables can only be launched from C:\Programs.
Of course there are ways to sneak things in there, especially portable apps.
Alas, many Portable (with capital P) apps refuse to run from locations like C:\Programs. And those who do, cannot write to configuration files in the same folder as the executable -- only under the user home dir.
Are there, or could there be, ways to make FP work under such constraints ?
Alternately, as it seems to be based on AHK (which I also use on that workstation), is it possible to run the code independently on an existing instance of AHK ?
I realize this is an extreme corner case, but I thought I'd ask nonetheless :-)
TIA,
fp
Bonjour fp,
Yes this can certainly be done. Instead of forcing the working directory to the app's directory as it is now, I can use the "Start in:" working directory as set by the user in a shortcut. By default (or if you run directly the .exe file), the working directory would still be the app's directory. The working directory is used to save the folderspopup.ini file and to create a temporary folder with images and language files. It is erased after FP execution.
Regarding your second question, I.m not sure I understand?
Merci Jean pour la réponse rapide !
Yes, I believe setting the working folder from the shortcut properties (or a command-line option) would work just fine, if you could implement it.
As for the second approach, maybe I wasn't clear, or it doesn't make sense. But in the Git repo I saw AHK files, so I guess the FP executable is mostly an AHK launcher... so I thought that maybe, as I already have an AHK running for my own macros, I could run your AHK scripts directly without using the executable ?
The shortcut approach can be implemented very easily. This will be in 3.1.1 to be released this week-end. The command-line parameters would require additional coding.
I don't think the merge of your macros and FP script in the same executable would be safe (risk of script or environment variables conflicts). You could try to call the FP source code from your master AHK script. But you would do it "at your own risk" :-)
Okay, I'll wait for 3.1.1 then and try that first, thanks much ! :-)
ROFL... I have been refreshing this page since Sunday, and managed to miss the "minor releases" section hidden in the middle :-)
I've just tried 3.1.1 on my home PC, real nifty, and the shortcut path for the ini file works just fine, here.
The real test of course will be my Alcatraz work box, I'll give it a spin first chance I get, and see how it goes...
Thank for humouring me !
fp
I reorganized the content of this page for v3 and decided to put content for new users first. This is why the "What's new" is now placed somewhere in the middle of the page. Maybe I should move minor releases info at the beginning of the What's new section...
Happy to see that the shortcut approach works. Keep me posted about your work env.
Happy to report that even on my severely crippled Win7pro, FP with the shortcut hack works a treat !
Great job, this is going to change my life once I finish tuning it for the great garbage can that is the network share :-)
Great :-)
Solution against network garbage :-)
Quite funny but also a great solution against full-time employment :-)
Thanks for very useful software!
Thanks to you for your donation :-)
I discovered Folders Popup about one month ago, and it has been a BIG productivity boost! Today, I downloaded v 3.1.1, extracted the files, and when attempting to run the 64-bit version, I received the error message shown in this screenshot:
http://gyazo.com/2feac38d34f3e700e393b437864cf166
Any idea what the problem is? Any help is much appreciated...
Hello Vernon,
Thanks you for reporting this issue. The imageres.dll is a Windows system file that is normally found in the system32 folder under your Windows folder. Folders Popup is reading this file to display system icons in the popup menu. Could you check if you can find this file somewhere in a different folder than the one expected by Folders Popup?
In v3, I assume this file is always available if you run Windows 7. It seems that is is not always the case... In a future version, I could check if the file is available and disable icons if the file is not there. In the mean time, you can turn icons off in the folderspopup.ini file. This should let you use FP (without icons).
1) Quit Folders Popup. In the folder from where you run Folders Popup, open the file folderspopup.ini.
2) Under the [Global] section, edit the line "DisplayIcons=1", like this:
DisplayIcons=0
3) Save the folderspopup.ini file and restart Folders Popup.
Thanks for following up.
I am running Vista (yes... I am slow to upgrade operating systems :-). Not sure if that affects your instructions, but I will look into the location of the imageres.dll file. I also have my hard drive partitioned, with Windows Vista installed on C:, but I downloaded the Folders Popup .exe to the D: drive where I normally keep my portable apps. This worked okay with the previous version (2).
I'll try a few things and report back to you. Thank you for the prompt reply!
Jean,
I checked, and the imageres.dll is where you said it should be. See screenshot:
http://gyazo.com/0033d260330d90a2fae6bf9cca275165
OK, I think I see. The imageres.dll file is there but its content (icon images) is probably different that the version of the same file installed with Win 7. In order to confirm this, I would need to inspect the content of two files installed with Win Vista: "imageres.dll" and "shell32.dll" (both under "c:\windows\system32\"). Could you zip these two files and sent it attached to an email to ahk@jeanlalonde.ca ? With this, I could adapt the choice of icons taking into account the content of these files.
Beside this, when icons are turned off, is FP running well under Vista? It has been tested under Win XP, Win 7 and 8/8.1. But I never received test results from Vista users.
Thank you Vernon.
Yes, it runs fine on Vista. I emailed you the files. Thanks!
Got your files (thanks!) and adjusted the icons look up based in Vista dll files. This fix will be in v3.1.2, to be released later tonight.
Since the last update I get an error occasionally. It says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk6\DR6."
I don't believe I've every had a disk called that and certainly didn't link a folder to it. Any thoughts?
This error message is produced when FP scans the list of "Recent folders" in your Windows "Recent items" folders (see C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items). This tells that, recently, an external drive named "\Device\Harddisk6\DR6" was accessed from this PC.
There is some code in FP to avoid an error message when a folder referenced in the recent items has deleted or removed. But there seems to be an error messaged displayed by Windows itself (before FP can trap and handle the error correctly) when a external drive has been removed. I'll have to put some more time on this issue.
Until FP can handle this better, this error disappear should quite shortly when Windows will refresh/clean its recent items list.
Thanks for reporting this.
PS: the name "\Device\Harddisk6\DR6" could be an internal name given by Windows to an external drive connected to a USB port.
A follow-up on this. I tried to reproduce this issue on 2 PCs. On one PC I was able to reproduce the issue. But on my other PC, the same code produces no error. Two possible causes:
1) There is something in the Windows environment of the second PC (on on Chris's PC) that prevent the error to be trapped as it should be.
2) It would depend on the type of external drive. I did not use the same type of external drives on each PC.
More testing required. In the mean time, I made sure that the problematic code would not be executed at FP startup time. If it has to happen, the error will occur only when user chooses the "Recent folders" menu. This temporary fix will be in v3.1.2 to be released later tonight.
Option 1) seems to be true. Option is excluded because I had no problem on PC #2 with the external drive #1.
HELP needed! If you encounter this issue and have a minute, drop me an email at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca. I will send you instruction on how to run FP in diagnostic mode. From the diag info, I'll try to see what common to the env where we have this issue. Thanks in advance!
I got some hints on the AHK forum. I’ll test a few options in the next days and be back here on this.
I realize I never followed up on this issue here. This has been fixed in v3.2. Please let me know if this issue reappears.
really well made
Thank you Urs for your comment, and for your donation :-)
New known issue: when you open the popup menu using left-click on the Tray icon (new feature in v3), I just found that the "Special Folders" menu items "My Computer" and "Network Neighborhood" do not work. I'll work to fix this bug for the next release.
This has been fixed in v3.1.3.
Jean,
Thank you for your prompt attention to my Vista issue. Folder Popup is one of the best productivity tools in my arsenal. Very much appreciated and looking forward to future enhancements. Also, I left a small donation, and I encourage others that are benefiting from your efforts to do the same.
Thanks again, my friend!
Vernon
Thank you so much for your donation. And thank you for helping make FP better by reporting this Vista icons bug!
Is there any way for me to receive automatic updates of this discussion thread via email?
Yes. There is an RSS feed for the comments of this page. Its URL is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/CommentsForMyCodingProjects
To receive email alerts when this feed is updated (when there are a new comments), you can use this powerful tool: http://www.ifttt.com (IfThisThenThat).
Please, see detailed explanation on this new blog post.
I just published a bug fix release v3.1.3:
* Bug fix: make all Special Folders menu items work when popup menu is activated from the tray icon.
* Improve handling of folders including hash (aka Sharp / “#”) to work around bug in Shell.Application (see v1.2.6).
* Fix a bug when navigating in a Shell window (CMD) to a folder path including AHK reserved chars (^!+#).
Next release should be 3.2 and include mostly improvements of the integration with Directory Opus. I'll run a short beta phase for this release. DOpus users interested in participating in these tests, please email me at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca .
I use a Logitech M600 mouse with no physical button, how can I use your software.
kind regards
Hello Olivier,
I never used this type of mouse. There must be a way to configure an emulation for the Middle Button on this mouse using the SetPoint config software. See http://www.logitech.com/en-ca/support/touch-mouse-m600 for more info.
Until you find a solution to this, you can also:
- open the popup menu by clicking on the FoldersPopup icon in the Tray (notification area)
- or use the keyboard shortcut Windows-K
In Folders Popup, you can change the button/keyboard shortcuts that trigger the popup menu: open "FoldersPopup Settings" from the Tray icon (or press Shift-Windows-F).
Hope this helps.
@Oliver HABAU
A user on Logitech's support site says about the M600, "... if you place two fingers a little ahead of the logo on top and click it produces a middle click."
This is similar to the gesture that I use on my Logitech T630 mouse. Try some of the T630 gestures on your T600 from this Logitech page: http://www.logitech.com/assets/50008/t630-touch-gestures-guide.pdf
Thank you for this tip, Netpilot.
Hi the recent folder menu does not work with directory opus. Are you aware of that?
Hello,
Thank you for reporting this. However, I cold not reproduce any issue with the Recent folders menu using v3.1.3. Could you give more info on what's happening?
This is not related to Recent folders but, FYI, in v3.1.3, FP is opening folders in DOpus by sending keystrokes. In the next version, I will use DOpus internal commands (with DOpusRt) to make it more reliable.
Jean
thanks, makes sense now that I know that it sends keys. Also note that the folders that I open with directory opus do not appear in the recent folder menu.
Recent folders collection is managed by Windows, not Folders Popup. FP is only reading this. I would be interested to know what they say about that on DOpus forum. One more to-do!
About the actual version, sending keys is used for all navigation in DOpus, not only for Recent folders. Does FP work with DOpus for other type of folders on your system?
yes it does, the default shortcut WIN+K opens folders instantly if you mean that.
Great. Thanks!
Bonjour Jean,
merci pour cette v3.
Now in english (for sharing) a little "enhancement request" :
With v3, all folders in menu can display an icon.
Great... but limited. Because (execept if I missed something !), this icon is the same for all folders.
While it would be really interesting to have beside each folder icon defined for the folder (thanks to a desktop.ini file, or menu properties on the folder).
If this is not feasible, would it be at least possible to define, in FolderPopup setup, which icon associate to each folder ?
To have specific options makes indeed even more powerful presence of icon.
And whatever your answer, thank you for your tool.
Bonjour Laurent,
This request is already on the wish-list. I have not put much time on this yet. But your idea to rely on the desktop.ini file is a very interesting approach. I looks much lighter to read the desktop.ini than managing all the custom icon info in FP's data. I added this idea to the wishlist and +1 this item.
Custom menu and submenu icons are now implemented in vbeta release v3.9.5 (http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v4-ready-for-beta-test-testers-wanted/).
To keep the app portable, I decided not to use or modify the desktop.ini files. Custom menu icons are registered centrally in the folderspopup.ini file. But you'll have all the flexibility to change icons for folder, documents, URLs and submenu icons by using icons available in system files (like shell32.dll or imageres.dll), in any .exe or .ico file.
If you wish, you can build your own .ico file using an app like http://www.iconverticons.com or a web service like http://www.converticon.com (see this short instructions video).
bonjour,
FolderPopup, pleasant and very useful software.
Please, how to REMOVE Popup Folders? Thanks!
Very easy: left-click the Folders Popup tray icon and click “Exit FoldersPopup”. This will quit the app and release the mouse buttons and hotkeys it used. To completely remove the app, you only need to delete the exe and ini files.
Great tool. Thank you for creating it. I have one comment. When clicking a FP favorite while in windows explorer, it just changes to that location. When clicking a FP favorite in a "save-as" dialog box, it auto-saves to that location. Not sure if this is by design, but it would be best if it just changed to that location and let us manually click the save button. This way if we needed any further manual navigation in the dialog box it is possible. Thank you again.
Thank you Darren for reporting this. By design (and normally), FP will have the same behavior in file dialog boxes: change folder and give back control the user.
What you report is not normal. Is it doing this for all Save As windows or only with a specific application? You could try with the very basic notepad.exe?
If you have a minute, could you email me at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca and I'll tell you how to run FP in dagnostic mode. This could help me understand what is happening.
You know, today it is not doing it. I've again tried it in several save-as boxes and it is working properly. Not sure what was triggering this behavior yesterday. If I can reproduce it in the future I'll send you an email. Thanks for the response.
Someone else reported the same issue but only using MS Excel 2007 under Windows XP. I'll try to see with this user what can be done to avoid this. Thanks for following up.
I was able to reproduce this issue on a PC with Windows XP and Office 2007. This has also been reported with Office 2003. These versions of MS Office use a non-standard file dialog box type (event if they are made by Microsoft...). This is not visible to users but these apps file dialog boxes (Open, Save As, etc.) have different properties and behavior than regular Windows file dialog boxes. The standard file dialog boxes are used by Windows tools like Notepad but also by most third party apps. Starting with Office 2010, Word, Excel, etc. adopted the standard Windows dialog boxes.
At the time I released the first versions of Folders Popup (last autumn), I had a technique that could change folder in Office 2007 file dialog box (and Office 2003 also, probably although I never tested it). But this code does not work anymore today, even if I re-run an old version of FP. I can't explain this.
What is bad about this is that trying to use FP in an Office 2007 Save As dialog box can produce unexpected results. When FP sends an {Enter} keypress to the dialog box, it should normally change the folder and return control to the user. Actually, it can save the file in an uncontrolled way and close the dialog box (no control on the file name, the folder, etc.). I really don't like it!
Knowing this today (unless I find a solution in the next days), I'll have to remove support for Office 2003/2007 file dialog box support in the next FP release.
Hi Jean. I'll send you tomorrow my donation.
FoldersPopup helped me with ease to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7, it's an excellent freeware.
Thanks Jean and congratulations for FoldersPopup.
Martin
Thank you, Martin!
Folderspopup is an excellent program. I thank you for it.
How do I put a shortcut on a FP menu? In particular, I have had no success with the shortcut
C:\Users\Harvey\Desktop\Canon MX920 series Printer - Shortcut
or the target
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Devices and Printers\Canon MX920 series Printer.
Is there a trick I don't know?
--Harvey
Hi Harvey,
First time this is requested to include a shortcut as favorite.
Try to create a "Link (URL)" favorite. In Settings: click "Add", click "Link (URL)", enter your shortname, and enter "C:\Users\Harvey\Desktop\Canon MX920 series Printer – Shortcut" in the "Link (URL)" text field. Save and test it.
It was not necessarily planned for this but, on my system, a "Link" favorite works for shortcuts.
I'm taking a note of this request. Would you use shortcuts for other targets than printer?
When I do as you suggest, I get a diagnostic window "FoldersPopup-3_2__2-64bit.exe"
Error: Failed attempt to launch program or document:
Action:
Params:
Specifically: The system cannot find the file specified.
--> Line #
2295:Run,%strLocation%
The current thread will exit.
(If I double click on the desktop icon for the shortcut, it opens the right window.)
Hum... When you paste that location (C:\Users\Harvey\Desktop\Canon MX920 series Printer – Shortcut) in the Start Menu search text box, does it work? If it works there, it will work if you enter is as a "Link" favorite. If not, make sure the shortcut path and name are correct.
I need the " " around the link (presumably because of the spaces), but the Windows 7 Search box finds the link ok.
I still get the same error with FP when I use the link with the " ".
No, you don't include the " ". I inserted this only to isolate toe the to paste. Quotes are not needed. Hope this will work.
It doesn't work with or without the quotes. Same error each time.
I can only reproduce this error (same line number) when I voluntarily enter a typo in the name of the shortcut. Please check the name of the shortcut again. For safety, use the Properties dialog box to copy its name.
I got it to work! I needed to add the extension ".lnk" The menu item now works either as a document or URL.
Once again, thanks for your great utility.
Good to know. Thanks for reporting it.
Jean
You can't assign Windows-K under Windows 8.1
Its fixed by the system and opens the Devices menu on the right.
I reassigned the function in Folders Popup to Windows-O
which has no conflict and is also a better to remember (O for Open).
You are right about Windows-K. Good point.
The Win 8.1 doc (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/keyboard-shortcuts#keyboard-shortcuts=windows-8) says:
Windows logo key+K -> Open the Devices charm
But I found that Windows-O is also used in Win 8:
Windows logo key+O -> Lock the screen orientation (portrait or landscape)
I am of the opinion that the Win-O shortcut would be a better candidate as FP shortcut (and I like the idea of "O" for "Open"). But I'll take a little more time to see if some letters are still not used.
After research on Microsoft site and Wikipedia, we end up with only 3 shortcuts truly unused, and one used only in Microsoft OneNote. What would be your preference?
Please, answer this SURVEY.
For more info, see: New Windows-key shortcut for Folders Popup.
The survey is now closed. Win-A won ;-)
This is implemented in the beta version v3.9.1 and will be released publicly in Folders Popup v4 in a near future.
Hi Jean,
When I try to run FoldersPopup in Terminal Services, I get this error dialog
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3KThAmsOhYw/VECWLYowXmI/AAAAAAABh78/MjPSsn6MFjk/w428-h254-no/2014-10-17%2B15_08_00-mRemoteNG%2B-%2BconfCons.xml.png
Hi Ananda,
I don't think this is because you run FP in Terminal Services but because the imageress.dll file on the remote PC is not of the version expected by FP. If you could send me by email (ahk@jeanlalonde.ca) a copy of the imageres.dll file (see its path on the error message) and tell me what Windows version is running on this machine. I'll see what we can do.
In the mean time, try turning the icons off by editing the folderspopup.ini on the remote machine. Locate the DisplayIcons key under the Global section and change its value to 0:
[Global]
...
DisplayIcons=0

Hello,
I am looking for the replacement of "FolderGuide"
Is there a way to integrate the "FolderPopup"-Icon into the context-menu of win7?
It would be great if it worked like "FolderGuide" on XP.
Many thanks!
Peter
Hi PeterD,
I can add it to the wish-list. But I need to understand what would be the advantage of right-clicking and selecting FP menu in the right-click menu, compared to middle-clicking and getting the menu right away?
Jean
Bonjour Jean
Thanks for the quick reply!
We have worked with Folder Guide (http://www.freeware365.com/desktop/folderguide.htm)and our staff have become accustomed.
In addition, our Mice have no middle button and the Mac-user (TS 2008 and 2012) can simulate this well.
However, current on this server I also have the problem with imageres.dll.
But I hope I get it under control with your help.
many thanks
PeterD
Hi Peter,
I'll do some research on integrating the FP menu to the Explorer context menu, or at least a command in the context-menu that would trigger the FP menu as an alternative to the Middle mouse button.
Meanwhile, you could also see if using the Tray menu (left-click on the FP icon in the notification zone) is a good alternative. Also, but this is a little more for advanced users, you could replace the middle-mouse button by, for example, Windows key+Right-click. See the Settings, Options window (top section) for this.
Lastly, regarding the imageres.dll issue, is it the same issue reported by Ananda? I mean in the same company? Or is it another instance of the same issue?
And thank you for your donation :-)
Jean
Bonne soirée Jean
Thanks for the information.
I will send you a print screen on your PN. In the picture you can see how it looks with Folder Guide in the Explorer context menu
I do not know Ananda Sim. I live in Switzerland between Zürich and St. Moritz, nearly Chur.
Imageres.dll: but i think it's the same issue. But we use Windos Server 2012R2
Thank you
PeterD
This is a reply to the above comments from PeterD about icons on a Windows Server (and probably also to Ananda Sim comment a little earlier).
Icons shown in Folders Popup come from two files installed with Windows: shell32.dll and imageres.dll. The choice of icons in these file is different from one Windows version to the other. Currently, the icons in FP has been tested on current Windows workstation versions (XP, Vista, 7 and 8/8.1). Since Windows Server user base is much smaller than workstation user base and because sysadmin generally use Win Server only for short sessions, the quickest solution implement to solve this issue is to disable icons when FP is running on Windows Server. I'll do it in the next release and will see if I can put more time on this later.
Meanwhile, turning the icons off by editing the folderspopup.ini on the remote machine is still a workaround. Locate the DisplayIcons key under the Global section and change its value to 0:
[Global]
…
DisplayIcons=0
Thank you Peter for helping me diagnose this issue.
Update: This has been fixed in v3.3. No need to disable the icons anymore on Windows Server versions.
Hi Jean!
This program is getting better with each update.Thank you for your great work.
I would like to change the submenu icons: is this possible? (personalized icons would be a great update!!:-)
Also I realized that it is possible to add links to *.exe files, (it works as: "add document", so in the add window it must say, "link" Best regards!!
Hi Mario,
Thank you for your good words.
Favorite icons customization is on the wish-list. I take not of your "+1".
Not sure I get your point about links and .exe files. Both types of favorite will work for executable. The main difference between the two is that with Document, the menu shows the exe file's icon. With URL, it shows the browser's icon.
Hi Mario,
Submenu icons has been implemented in beta version v3.9.4. See here:

Custom icons for favorites (folders, documents, etc.) are in the work for one of the next beta releases.
All favorites custom icons available. Please, see http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/#comment-9533
Hello Jean
Great tool!
I have one more request:
If you want to create a new link, it would be very nice if Folder pop-up notice when you click on a folder that this folder will then be added to the link list.
And not the folder in which this subfolder is.
Thank you very much
Peter
I see. This would be done using the context menu (right-clicking on the folder that you want to add). Suggestion noted.
Thank you Peter
Hi,
Thanks for this beautiful, helping software. I have a suggestion, or request, concerning an important option which hasn't been seen in designing it.
Let's suppose we've got Folder A which includes the subfolder X. If the Folder A is on Folders Popup but the subfolder is not, and we want to copy or move something to the subfolder, since the subfolder does not exit on our Folders Popup and we try to select the main Folder A so that we then go to the subfolder, and copy/move our thing to that sub-directory, we can't. The thing is straight copied or moved to Folder A.
Can you revise the Folders Popup to act like, for instance, FileBox Extender to let us first go to the nearest desired directory which exists on Folders Popup without copying/moving our stuff so that we then go to our intended sub-folder and only then copy/move it?
With best regards.
Hi Hemmati,
> The thing is straight copied or moved to Folder A.
If I get it right, this is not the expected behavior. Normally, FP takes you to folder A and stops there, letting you browse to the target folder X and do what whatever you want without copying/moving anything. What you describe is as if FP was hitting the "OK" button immediately in folder A.
A few questions for you, please:
Is this happening only when you use FP in dialog boxes? Is FP behaves correctly in regular Explorer windows?
What FP version are you using?
On what Windows version are you?
In what software are you experiencing this behavior?
Could you check if it does the same thing in basic apps like Notepad?
Thanks for your good words and for reporting this issue.
Hi, Jean!
The issue is out of question in regard to the Explorer. It has no problem in Open/Save dialog boxes either. In Open/Save dialog boxes, it behaves normally and according to what you said--takes us to the directory and let's us browse to the desired sub-directories. What I just raised happens in the browsing boxes when we copy or move files or folders. In this case, when I click on the directory in FP it copies or moves the files/folders to the same directory that is on FP without giving us the option to browse to the subdirectories included there.
I'm not sure if it's a bug or it's only my problem.
My FP version: 3.3 (I face this issue in the previous versions, too)
My OS is Windows 7, SP 1 (X32)
It's not related to any software; it happens while copying/moving files/folders
As I just said, in Open/Save dialog boxes--ie when trying to save or open any file (not just notepad [txt] files--FP behaves correctly.
I had this very problem with other similar software (Access Folders, Fast Folder Access, PS Hot Folders, among many, as far as I can remember) too. Only FB Extender behaves normally, but Folders Popup is really lovely and masterly designed. Unlike all the other similar software, everything in FP is elegant and I can't discard it. I hope you raise the issue and add FP's icon in Explorer bar, too, in the ensuing versions if possible.
With best regards.
I use both AutoDialogues and FBox on my Win XP but on Win 7 they are incompatible, and I have to use only one of them.
> What I just raised happens in the browsing boxes when we copy or move files or folders.
There are so many ways to copy/move files. Could you describe the method you use that is bringing this dialog box?
1) I select a file/folder.
2) In the Edit Menu in Windows Explorer, I click on "Move to Folder" (or I reverse-click the selected file/folder and click on the "Move to Folder").
3) A Browsing dialog box appears.
4) In a blank space, I click on the Middle Mouse Button to summon Folders Popup.
5) In Folders Popup menu I select a directory.
6) The file is straight moved to that directory.
FP does not stay on that directory and does not wait for me to select a sub-directory of that directory so that I may then click OK or Cancel.
Thank you for these details. What version of Windows do you use?
Windows 7 Ultimate, SP 1, x86
Hi Hemmati,
OK, I see. This is this type of dialog box:
Sorry if I've been slow to get it. I never use the Edit menu in Explorer. In fact, the menu bar is hidden on my system. I generally use shortcuts or drag-and-drop.
Unfortunately, this type of dialog box cannot be manipulated from an external program the same way regular open/save dialog boxes. This is because the text zone cannot be used to reload the treeview in another folder as we can do in regular file dialog boxes. I was under the impression (from old tests) that FP was just ineffective in this type of dialog. I don't like the fact that files or folders can be copied or moved unexpectedly. I'll put some time on it. Probably not to find the solution you are looking at (I did some research and manipulating this treeview is very challenging) but at least to avoid the unwanted effect.
Thank you for reporting this.
Hi, Jean!
Thanks for your final remarks. I just said almost all the similar programs--about 30 ones--which I've worked with and tried have the same issue. I hope you raise it and thus render the lovely, elegant FP unique in every respect.
With best regards.
Many programs use this standard Windows dialog box ("Select folder" with a Tree View). It is really sad how Microsoft designed this component... I'll see what I can do. For those interested on the technical side of it, you can see how this thread on the AHK forum will evolve: http://ahkscript.org/boards/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4998
Until a solution is found to this issue, the "Select Folder" dialog box is not supported in Folders Popup since v3.9.3.
I use 7+ Taskbar Tweaker in conjunction, with Folders Popup. I noticed as of version 3.3, when I middle click on the task bar, I get the Folders Popup menu, instead of the intended action via 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, which is the very useful close command.
I reverted back to Folders Popup version 3.2.2, middle clicking a task bar item instantly closes it with 7+ Taskbar Tweaker , and the Folders Popup menu isn't invoked when middle clicking the task bar any longer.
If I wasn't brain dead, I would have tried running version 3.3 without 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, to see if middle clicking the task bar still invoked the Folders Popup menu? So I don't know if this is a problem specific to running Folders Popup along side of 7+ Taskbar Tweaker?
Regards, Tim
Thank you for reporting this, Tim. There are so many tools out there an app like FP has to cohabit with!
Yes, since v3.3, I treat the task bar (class Shell_TrayWnd) the same way I treat the desktop. For those not using 7+ TB, this make one more way to popup the FP menu. I will add an option for this.
Hi Tim,
This option has been implemented in beta version v3.9.3 available here:

BTW I just love Folders Popup, a huge time saver! I forgot the afore mentioned issue occurred on three win7 64bit machines.
Thanks for Folders Popup
And thank you for your good words.
The warning message for changing theme should popup ONLY if there is unsaved changes to the folders menu.
[Global]
PopupHotkeyKeyboard=!space
Pour ce qui est de faire de Alt-Espace la touche de raccourci par défaut, j'ai des réserves car je voudrais éviter d'interférer avec les applications qui utilisent déjà cette combinaison.
Merci d'avoir soulevé ce point!
For English readers:
A limitation of the current interface of "Change hotkey" dialog box prevents entering a "space" in the "Keyboard" zone. But until I correct this limitation, you can change the shortcut directly into the folderspopup.ini file. In the Global section, change the following value:
[Global]
PopupHotkeyKeyboard! = Space
With regard to making Alt-Space hotkey the default hotkey, I'm not sure because I want to avoid interfering with applications already using this combination.
Bonjour Frédéric,
Vos deux suggestions (séparateur de colones et la touche espace comme hotkey) sont implantées dans la version beta v3.9.3 disponible ici:

Hello Jean,
I just installed FoldersPopup on a Win 7 machine and it works beautifully, thank you! I have two questions:
1. In the Settings dialog box there is a dropdown called "Menu to edit" but the only choice is "Main". How do I create other menus?
2. Is there a way to to tell FoldersPopup to use Total Commander's "Directory Hotlist" menu? Long ago, I used a program called FlashFolder that did this.
Thanks,
-Rob
Hi Rob,
1) In Settings, click the "Add" button and select "Submenu" (the last radio button).
2) This is on the wish-list and I added your +1.
Thank you for your good words.
Hi,
another one:
Folder19=jörg giencke | internet design (NEU)|http://www.test.loc/|>Firefox>Webdesign||U
this one is not displayed. I guess it's because the name contains '|' which you're using as a separator. I'm afraid you have to introduce some escaping - or - prevent users from using 'special chars' to avoid problems like this.
You are right. Because there is an easy workaround (not using this character in the favorite name), I'll wait for the next major release before fixing it.
Thanks Jörg for catching this one too. You would be a good beta tester :-)
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v4-ready-for-beta-test-testers-wanted/
And thank you also for your donation.
The vertical bar is now a reserved character in submenu or favorite names. I could escape it in the future but for now, I prefer this safer approach. It will be first released in beta v3.9.6 and inregular release v4.
Jean,
Minor typo:
you list your latest update in history (link ==> http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/ ) as v3.1.1 but this should be v3.3.1 I think.
Regards
George
Fixed. Thanks!
Small request/suggestion : The program asks for internet access on start up. Maybe it's checking for updates. Please provide a option to disable this.
- Avoid firewall popup.
- Some users may not be comfortable with it.
Have a option to "Add this folder" automatically. Save users a click or two - on Add and Save.
> option to disable
Noted.
> option to “Add this folder” automatically. Save users a click or two – on Add and Save.
Could you confirm my understanding of what would be made automatic: use the proposed favorite name (the name of the deepest folder name is proposed as favorite name) and place it in the main menu?
Thanks for your input GBR.
Exactly. This would be a option of course - the user should be able to disable it and the program would behave as it does now.
Or maybe have two seperate items in the menu :
Add this folder
Add this folder (auto)
Yes, this would be an "opt-in" option (ie: initially disabled). I don't like the idea of two menu entries. I try to keep the menu as short as possible.
Thank you again for your suggestions. Added to the wish-list.
Folders Popup is perfect!
Good job!
Just a suggestion option: Maybe a field where a keyword would be very interesting is introduced. This keyword opens an application, provides a shortcut, put the PC to sleep, etc.
As in the freeware Slick Run (http://www.bayden.com/slickrun/).
Excuse my bad english.
Bonjour nmuire,
Jean
