Good morning Jean
the version 4 looks good.
It would be great if you could use your tool on Terminal Server 2012:
The program file and the settings in "c:\programmfiles" and the user configuration in "C:\user"
Is this possible?
Thank you for your work!
Peter
Hi PeterD,
The new setup file offered with v4 installs FP in a folder under the "Program Files" folder.
The Settings and User configuration are the same thing: the folderspopup.ini file. This file can be in the folder of your choice. To change the location of the config folder, edit the shortcut that launch FP (see this screen capture for an example of this screen). If you launch FP at startup, this shortcut is in the "Start / Startup" folder and is named "FoldersPopup.lnk".
In the "Start in" field, enter the user folder, for example "C:\User".
Regarding the Terminal Server 2012, not sure I understand your question. What Windows version runs on the remote system? If it is Win XP or more recent, you should not have problem installing and running FP. Only limitation, if the remote OS is Windows Server, icons will not be supported.
hello Jean
Thank you for your quick response.
I've corrected it and it works so well.
How can I define the folders that are used by default (C: \; C: \ windows etc.) when you first start?
The information about the operating system I will send you later
Best regards peter
> How can I define the folders that are used by default (C: \; C: \ windows etc.) when you first start?
Not sure I understand your question. When you first start FP, go to "Settings / Options" and make sure the "Run at startup" option is selected and save options. Then, open the FoldersPopup.lnk file properties in the folder:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Window s\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
(this is for Win 7 - it may differ depending on your OS version)
Then, edit the "Start in" folder (for example: C:\MyConfig"and save the shortcut properties. If you already have favorites in the folderspopup.ini file, you should copy this file to the working directory (C:\MyConfig). If you don't, a brand new folderspopup.ini file will be created in that folder.
Hope this helps.
OK. From your email, I see that I have misunderstood you. You want to know how to control the initial content of FP popup menu when you install the app.
The menu content is stored in the file folderspopup.ini that is created the first time you run FP. If the file already exists, it is never overwritten. What you could do for your users is to create a folderspopup.ini file customized for your company and install it with the FoldersPopup .exe file. The .ini file must be installed before the first execution of the .exe file. That way, at the first execution, your users will have your company custom menu.
Hope this helps.
PS: You must not use the new setup procedure tested actually with v4 beta. You have to use the portable install procedure.
Is there a way to disable the "FoldersPopup ready!" message in the system tray every time it is launched?
I know it is a small thing, though for some reason it annoys me.
Maybe this could be an option for users that have made donations.
Otherwise, thanks for the great utility.
Yes, there is the option "Display Startup Tray tip" in the "Settings / Options" dialog box.
Thank you for your good words :-)
Hi,
it seems the app's got problems with commas (and maybe more chars) in paths:
Folder3=SITCO|C:\Kunden\Ziegler, Udo\Stau International Trading Company|>Kunden||F >> GOES TO 'My Documents'
Folder4=ZEPCON|C:\Kunden\Ziegler, Udo\Zepcon Engineering|>Kunden||F >> GOES TO 'My Documents'
Folder6=Test|C:\Freigaben\jgid-lenovo\Gemeinsame Dateien\jgid-mobile|>Kunden||F >> WORKS
The only 'strange' thing I can see in Folder 4 and 6 is the comma.
Regards,
Jörg
The comma problem only occurs when you try to open those folders after you had opened FoldersPopup by clicking on the Desktop. When you open FoldersPopup by clicking on an Explorer Window openeing those folders work.
Yes, you are right. This is a bug and it occurs only when you want to open the folder in a new Explorer (either by clicking on the Desktop or using the Shift+Middle Mouse button). I'll fix it ASAP!
Thank you for reporting it.
This is fixed in v3.3.1 (download link at the top of this page). This is the only change in this release but I did not want to let it out until v4 is released.
For v4 beta testers, this will also be fixed in v3.9.6 to be released in the next days.
Great support (and great app - btw)! Thank you!
Hi! Can you add more color selections (perhaps a color-picker) and document support to folderspopup, please?

Hi Joseph,
I take note of your suggestion for a color picker. But you can add your own color themes in the ini file. See these instructions: About Folders Popup color themes.
Documents are supported. Go to Settings, click Add and select the Documents radio button.
I like the Folders Popup program. However it loses all the saved paths every time I update. I updated again yesterday and lost everything. So I re-add them as usual. Today there wasn't an update, but everything disappeared again.
I am on a 64 bit machine running the 64 bit version. I have an SSD drive as my primary drive. FoldersPopup is installed (or at least lives) on my D Drive in the Program Files (x86) directory. The .ini file does still contain all my shortcuts from yesterday, they just aren't in the program. Here are the Folders portion of the .ini file. Hope you can figure this out. Thanks.
Folder1=D:\|D:\|||F
Folder2=D:\All Shortcuts|D:\All Shortcuts|||F
Folder3=S:\ES\ESFrame\Bats|S:\ES\ESFrame\Bats|||F
Folder4=C:\inetpub\Logs|C:\inetpub\wwwroot\EDENWeb\Logs|||F
Folder5=G:\File_Drop\Development\Robert.williams|G:\File_Drop\Development\Robert.williams|||F
Folder6=CMD Window|C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe |||F
Hi Robert,
It is probably that FP cannot create/update the folderspopup.ini file because everything under the "Program Files" folder is write-protected for applications. Re-install FP in a folder under "My Documents" or something like "C:\FoldersPopup" if you prefer. Then FP will have the authorization to create and update the folderspopup.ini file.
With the next version of FP (v4) to be released in the next weeks, a more advanced setup procedure will make it easier to install the app in the "Program Files" folder and the .ini file in the user's AppDate folder.
Hi again Robert,
I was at the end of my work lunch break when I replied to your comment and, re-reading it, I would like to add this:
- the situation you describe could result from running different versions of FoldersPopup in different folders;
- when you update FP, add the new .EXE file in the same folder where the previous version was running (you can delete the old version);
- do not delete the folderspopup.ini to keep the folders list from your previous version;
- as stated earlier, run FP from a regular folder (not a system-protected folder like those under "C:\Program Files").
More info here:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/#update
I also added a note in the Download section:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/#download
Hope this helps.
Hi Jean
I have a couple of issues with payment for FolderPopup v3.3.2 (64 bit).
The first is that when I click on "Support Freeware!" from within the program a window appears with the options of either paying by PayPal or by Share-it, unfortunately this window only appears for a few seconds before vanishing so it's unusable...
The other problem is that I tried to donate via Share-it from the link on your web page: I went through the process but on the final part the page got stuck on "processing". I guess this is a Share-it/Digital River GmbH issue rather than yours but I thought I should mention it. Update: actually I now have confirmation that my payment went through, though it's still a bit unsatisfactory that Share-it's site doesn't work very well.
I am happy to pay for FoldersPopup as it is such a useful piece of software which I use many times every day. I'm so interested in it I might ask to be a beta tester for FoldersPopup v4.
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul,
I received your donation and sent you the confirmation by email. Thanks you very much.
I receive more donation via Paypal than Share-it. This is the first time an issue with Share-it is reported. I'll keep an eye on this. May I ask you why you preferred this platform to Paypal?
About your issue:
> unfortunately this window only appears for a few seconds before vanishing so it’s unusable…
I'm sorry, I could not reproduce it. But I'll double-check.
Thanks again.
Hi Jean,
I tried Share-it because my I've just signed up to PayPal and my registration is not complete (I don't have a funding mechanism in place), I guess I could still have chosen that route and entered credit card information.
Thanks for such a great piece of software.
Paul
OK. I see.
> I am happy to pay for FoldersPopup as it is such a useful piece of software which I use many times every day. I’m so interested in it I might ask to be a beta tester for FoldersPopup v4.
I forgot to reply about this part of your message. Thank you for offering. But the beta test phase is almost over. If everything goes well, I'll release v4 later today.
Thank you for offering your time and thank you for your good words!
Hi Jean,
In v4 is there any way to import the folders and documents you had set up in v3?
Thanks
Paul
Yes. If you are using the new setup tool, see these instructions: "Update from a v3 (or older) version using the new setup tool". The previous folderspopup. ini will be transferred to the new installation.
If you downloaded the v4 zip file for a portable installation, unzip it in the folder where you were running FP. The previous folderspopup. ini will be preserved.
Hi,
Just thought I'd point out that with v4, the issue I had in v3 where the "Support Freeware!" window was dismissing itself, no longer happens.
Thanks
Paul
Good. In theory, nothing has changed in this regard. Let's file it under "Computing mystery" folder ;-)
I've been using another program (FbX) for many, many years and evaluating Folders Popup side-by-side with it for quite some time.
Conclusion? I now prefer Folders Popup. Version 4 is so good, I just had to donate.
Thanks for a great product! I look forward to even more enhancements.
Thank you for your comment and for your donation. Appreciated :-)
Thanks again for this handy tool!
I noticed two issues, perhaps bugs:
1. I've set Total Commander path in the Settings, and works fine. But when using the Recent Folders hotkey (the separate one, not the first in the Settings dialog - 5th from top) not TC is started but the default Explorer.
2. In Open/Save dialog boxes TC is launched (if filled in the Settings), instead of navigating the dialog to the desired location. This makes this feature unusable.
Any chance to check these?
Hi tpr,
1) This is a bug. Good catch! I'll work on it quickly.
2) I could not reproduce this issue using the regular trigger Middle-mouse button (MMB). It happens (as designed) only if I use the Shift-MMB or if I use the Tray icon.
Thanks for reporting this.
1 - Thanks!
2 - Thanks, but I still believe there's something wrong here.
Here is a screenshot of my settings: http://rolandtoth.hu/pic/FoldersPopup01.png
So when I hit "ctrl-shift-MMB" the Recent folders menu pops up. And because I've set Total Commander as the main folder "handler" in FoldersPopup, I would expect that if I click on an item on the Recent list will launch Total Commander. Instead, I got the regular Windows Explorer window.
3: You've got a mail! :)
Sorry, I missed up things at number 2 :(
Also I was using hotkey for "Mouse - New Explorer" instead of "Mouse - Folders Popup".
Setting up hotkeys right fixed this, sorry for the inconvenience.
Bug in #1 has been fixed. It will be released in v4.0.1 as soon as possible. This bug was not encountered only with Total Commander. It was caused by code optimization don in v3.9.6 beta.
Seems to work fine, thanks!
Hi Jean,
I am using the portable version of v4.
2 things:
1 - If you create a shortcut to a program is it possible to change the default icon that Folders Popup displays? I ask this because I have several program shortcuts but only one displays the correct icon.
2 - A more serious issue. I saved a group of folders that included a shortcut to a USB stick/drive (L:\) but when I try to launch the group I get an error message that says 'Error loading group window "L:\" '
If I then try to dismiss this message by clicking OK it just re-appears - and it keeps on doing this. The only way to get rid of the error message is to close down Folders Popup.
Hope you can help
Thanks
Paul
See my reply to #1 below.
About #2, for sure, this should not look indefinitely. This is a bug. I'll fix it in v4.0.1.
But why do we enter in this endless loop? I assume that you checked that the USB key was reloaded with the same drive letter L: as when the favorites were created. I'll have to do some tests.
I solved the loop issue but could not reproduce the error. Using an USB key, I opened 3 Explorer windows with 3 different folders on the USB key, and I created a group with these 3 folders. If I removed the USB key and open the group, FP tries to open each folder but if they are not online, it default to the "My Documents" folder, which seems to me an acceptable fall back.
Actually with respect to point 1 above I should have said that it's the program shortcuts that display no icon at all, a file shortcut displays the correct icon. I've put up a screenshot here:
http://www.guitarscribe.uk/v4_folders_popup.png
Thanks
Paul
Hey a musician :-) Love music...
I could not reproduce this issue. I'm able to display several program icons in the FP menu and I can choose custom icons at will in the Add/Edit favorite dialog box.
Would you send me your folderspopup.ini file by email at ahk@jeanlalonde.ca please? Right click the FP Tray icon to find this file. I'll see what I can find.
Nice utility. Are you planning to add custom size for file dialogs and "window on top" like Direct Folders does? Thanks
Hi Carlos. I never used Direct Folders. Could you describe these features with a little more details?
Thanks for the answer. In Direct Folders it is possible to define globally the size (width x height) of all Dialog Boxes or per app. It is also possible to define globally or per app the view mode (thumbnail, details, etc..) and file sort on dialog boxes.
The "window on top" is an easy feature. Whenever we right-click the close (X) button of a explorer window, it stays always on top.
Another amazing and useful feature of Direct Folders is whenever a dialog box is opened in an application, if an explorer window is clicked, the active folder in the dialog box changes to the folder of the explorer window. Let's say, if I open the dialog box of Photoshop and then click on an explorer window of folder d:\photos, the dialog box in Photoshop changes automatically to that folder.
Congratulations for your great utility!
Thank you Carlos for your suggestions and for your good words.
Some of the are "+1" to suggestions I already received. I could not say when I'll attack these features but I confirm that I added all this to the wish-list.
Thanks!
Hi Jean,
I solved it. I was creating a shortcut in FoldersPopup to a link (a *.lnk file) - creating a shortcut to the actual program exe itself solved it, and it looks great. Sorry, my bad...
Thanks
Paul
Great :-)
I just uploaded a bug release fixing two relatively small bugs.
Version 4.0.1 (2014-12-09)
- Fix bug with Recent shortcut opening in a new Explorer window instead of navigating in the correct window.
- Fix bug properly exit group load loop when an error occurs within an iteration.
Sorry I didn't respond to your comment, I've only just seen it:
"But why do we enter in this endless loop? I assume that you checked that the USB key was reloaded with the same drive letter L: as when the favorites were created. I’ll have to do some tests."
Yes the USB drive was reloaded with the same drive letter L:
I haven't checked any of this out in v4.0.1 but if I find any continuing problems I'll let you know.
Paul
Be among the firsts to LIKE the brand new Folders Popup FACEBOOK page!
https://www.facebook.com/FoldersPopup
I like FP very much and I liked your facebook page.
It would be great if you could add some of the suggestions Carlos Viana made:
Define size of dialog boxes
Define view mode and file sort on dialog boxes
(globally or per app)
Thanks very much for this free software!
Thanks to you for your comment. I'll add your "+1" to the wish-list.
Bonjour,
A +
Bonjour Laurent,
Un petit mot pour souligner que la v4.1 maintenant en ligne corrige les problèmes avec la restauration des groupers de dossiers.
Merci pour votre soutien!
I just released v4.0.2., a small release to fix a bug affecting only non-English users, and only at the first run of FP.
The bug was making the language selected in the setup program being taken into account in Folders Popup only at its second execution. Now, the correct language is used from the very first execution.
The downloaded portable x64 version says 4.0.3
Yes, v4.0.3 was released but not broadcasted yet. The v4.0.4 will be announced in a minute :-)
A few minor releases in the last day to fix things in the in the Save this Group window.
In v4.0.3 and v4.0.4:
* More robust group load and window move and resize.
* Add a button in the Save this Group window to select or deselect all Explorer windows in the list.
* You can now click on column headers in the Save this Group window to sort the list of Explorer windows according to the content of the clicked column.
* Fix minor bugs related to Current Folders menu and Group of Folders menus.
Thanks for bug reports!
I've been enjoying folders popup. I actually use it as a program launcher more than to display folders. I keep adding more and more items, so the new Column Break feature is perfect.
Success creates a problem, though. There is no easy way to reorganize the list if it is long. My first request is to add a key combo, e.g., Alt+Down/Up to move menu items, in addition to the arrows you provide.
The second way to do this would be to allow multiple select of items in the menu so they could be moved together. Whichever is easier for you would work for me.
2. Another feature I would like is to have group headers in the menu, which go along with adding the horizontal line separator.
Thanks for a really great concept and execution.
Allen
First, thanks for sharing your satisfaction about Folders Popup :-)
I'm taking note of your suggestions and add them to the wish-list. The first one is easier to implement.
About #2, I'm not sure menu can have headers, unless I would let users create an action-less menu item that would serve as header. But I'm not very enthusiastic about this.
Finally, why don't you use submenus to break your long lists of menu items?
Hi AW,
#2 is done in beta version v4.1.8.4. I choose Ctrl instead of Alt. And I implemented other shortcuts as well. See:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v42-beta-tests/

16 November
Your "Download, execute this exe file" at the top of the page produces a "Page not found" message.I think it's for Ver 4.0.4
Merci
Hi John,
I re-uploaded the install file (folderspopup-setup.exe).
I was under the impression that it was there when I updated it to the v4.0.4 version Saturday. But I may be wrong.
Thanks for reporting this issue.
Jean
C'est bon - merci
Hi Jean,
I'm still having a problem with group folders although the problem isn't exactly the same as in a previous version of FP. What's happening here, in v4.0.4 (64 bit - portable version), is that when I try to load the group I get a series of error message boxes - but after I dismiss the error message the folder actually does load.
If you remember the problem I had with the earlier iteration was that I could not dismiss the error messages - they just kept coming back. But in this case I had three folders in the group and one by one all 3 opened after clicking on OK.
I've uploaded screenshots here:
http://www.guitarscribe.uk/Error_loading_group_window_1.png
http://www.guitarscribe.uk/Error_loading_group_window_2.png
http://www.guitarscribe.uk/Error_loading_group_window_3.png
Perhaps I should mention that I found this error on my second computer - I haven't tested group folders on the PC I am writing this on.
Cheers
Paul
Hi,
I think I solved this issue. This will be in v4.0.5 to be released this week-end. And if it does not work, I added some diagnostic code to help find what's going wrong.
Great, can't wait to see it.
Finally, I just released it under number v4.1. Thank you Paul for your help.
v4.1 is working :-)
Finally :-)
Feature idea: right-click (or middle-click) on an item in the popup menu to copy path
(and in Recent folders menu too)
Hi tpr,
Right-click is not something easily available with the tools I use. The idea of copying path is good however. We would just need another key combination to open the menu in order to copy the path (for example, Ctrl-Middle-Click).
That's better than nothing, thanks. It would have been ideal to use the RMB. I thought the AHK event holds information about the mouse button pressed.
> I thought the AHK event holds information about the mouse button pressed.
It is not documented as is. But maybe there is a system call (DLLCall) that can detect it? I searches the AHK forums about it but without success.
Neither I. How about registering the Rbutton hotkey before showing the folders menu, and on RButton set a flag + send LButton? (plus remove the RButton hotkey)
Hi tpr. Not sure I get your point but whichever hotkey I would propose as default could be changed in config. This is in the wishlist!
That would be the best, thanks!
I just released v4.1 with the following changes and improvements:
Version 4.1
* addition of Italian language, thanks to Riccardo Leone
* redesign the Help and Options windows into three tabs to save height on small screens
* change delays in group load
* change default to "add to existing windows" when creating a new group of folders
* solve icon issue with multi-column menus under Win XP, show icons only in first columns
* add BETA support for file manager connector FPConnect (from Roland Toth)
Thank you again for bug reports and suggestions!
Have you seen the new Folders Popup Facebook page?
>> * redesign the Help and Options windows into three tabs to save height on small screens
Good move!
:-) It was about time...
Jean,
Further up in the thread I said "v4.1 is working :-)" well I spoke too soon. After a reboot I tried loading my saved Group Windows but there was a problem with one of them; I've put up a screenshot here:
http://www.guitarscribe.uk/group_load_error_fp_4_1.png
Just like in the previous version of FP the problem folder actually does load once I click OK in the error message box.
I should have been able to give you diagnostic info about this but I made a mistake and accidentally overwrote the clipboard contents - sorry about that, I'll try to catch it next time.
Update: This is curious. I tried to replicate the error so I could grab diagnostic info but this time loading all the Group Windows worked - no error messages at all. Unusual. I'll just have to see if it happens again.
On another note AVG is still incorrectly detecting FP as a threat - I will post about this to: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/stop-anti-virus-blocking-folders-popup/
Thanks
Paul
So we are not 100% reliable on your system yet. Keep me posted on this. Please, send the diag info by email because it can be quite verbose.
Thanks.
Nothing to report so far - Groups of folders has been working properly on both my computers for several days now.
Hi, is there a way to update Folders Popup without losing all of my folders (from the previous version)? I love folders popup, but I just updated to 4.1 (from 3.2 I think) and I have to reset my folder locations.
Hi Joe,
You should not loose your configuration if you follow these instructions:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/#update
If you use the new setup tool ("Easy one-step installation"), make sure you read item #2 in "Update from a v3 (or older) version using the new setup tool".
If, on the other hand, you stick with the old "portable" install mode, you only have to install FP in the same folder. Your folderspopup.ini will be preserved.
Hi,
Great tool, thank you so much for it!
Please, add an option to only open when clicking on taskbar, when it is not on a taskbar item. Thank you!
Daniel
Hi Daniel,
I'm not sure if this can be done easily. What is the issue with having the whole taskbar middle-clickable?
Thank you.
I checked the portable version, folderspopup.zip file in Virustotal.com and the result is as follows,
Jiangmin Trojan/Writos.df
TrendMicro-HouseCall Suspicious_GEN.F47V1222
Zillya Backdoor.Ruskill.Win32.2810
As you can see them there are viruses in the file.
Can you check this issue if your file is safe to use?
Hope to have your answer by email. thanks.
I tend to believe the 56 other virus scanners...
Hi Bin won,
As said Geert, you will find on this page from an independent source that 66 virus scanners out of 68 said Folders Popup is safe. The two others are what is called "false positive": http://www.herdprotect.com/folderspopup.exe-283f4bca0256481cd7346c391d5b75dfc505af81.aspx
You can read more info about PC protection software and Folders popup on this page: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/anti-virus-blocking-folders-popup/
In Excel getting the message that "The picture is too large and will be truncated." when using 4.2 (and not when it is off). Has this been seen elsewhere?
Works well otherwise for me to donate, but I do use Excel heavily.
I am observing the same issue and would never have guessed that it is related to having FP running. Good catch!
Oh... I had the same issue but I thought it was related to a clipboard utility I installed (Clipjump). Seeing your comments, Colin and Eppo, I realize that this can be related to a patch I added to v4.2 to work around a undesired behavior of Windows: when you double click on an image, it copies the path of the image to the clipboard (erasing the content you may have in the clipboard). This is not an FP issue but it can happen when you move favorites by repeatedly clicking the up/down arrows buttons in Settings. I guess that the patch I wrote to preserve (backup/restore) the clipboard has an unwanted side effect in XL (and probably in other software).
Let me work on this. I may have to remove my patch. The clipboard issue was there for a long time and nobody complained about it...
Just for the record, this issue is also observed in Clipjump (http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/91488-clipjump-the-ultimate-clipboard-manager-updated-2608/page-23#entry608903). But this may be because FP is using the same command as CJ to backup the clipboard.
And, just to exclude this possibility, are you using ClipJump or another Clipboard utility?
no
OK. Working on it. Thanks for reporting this issue.
Fixed in v4.2.1. See: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/#comment-11193
I just uploaded v4.2.1, a bug fix release that solves two issues.
1) The first bug was introduced in v4.2 when I tried to solve a Windows issue (double-clicking on an image like up/down buttons overwrite the clipboard with the image filename). The patch I wrote for v4.2 has a side effect (error message) in MS Excel 2010. For now, I removed the patch and everything should be as good as it was before v4.2.
2) The second edit fixes an older issue dating back to v3 when I introduced color themes. It has been reported to me only recently that the colors selection in those themes integrate badly with Windows themes having dark colors background. I added to FP a theme named "Windows" that simply keeps the Windows theme's colors as-is. This solves the issue. NOTE: Current users having an issue with their current FP theme should change it to "Windows" in Settings / Options.
Version: 4.2.1 (2015-01-18)
* make FP compliant with Windows themes by adding a FP theme named "Windows" that keeps Windows theme's colors (making FP display OK when user selects a dark Windows theme)
* making the FP theme "Windows" selected by default for new users
* because of a side-effect in XL 2010, revert a patch in v4.2 to prevent double-click up/down buttons in Settings to overwrite the clipboard with the image URL (a Windows "undesired feature")
Download links are at the top of this page.
Thanks to users who reported these issues.
Thank you for your prompt response. Fixed my Excel issue.
Same here: Fixed. Thanks! I did observe the issue with Excel before, but never linked it to FP.

Hi Frederick,
Thanks for reporting this issue but I could not reproduce this error. When you click Yes, the URL http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/ should be open by your default browsers. As far as I can see, this worked for some time with v4.2 and previous versions for the majority of users. Maybe there is something unusual with your default browser setup?
@Other users: please let me know if also face this issue.
Thanks.
If I use Check for update and there is no update
and I select Visit the FoldersPopUp web page anyway
I get the following error:

There is nothing wrong with my default browser settings in Windows 8.1 (Firefox)
Using FP 4.2.1 x64
I was not able to reproduce it again. Searching on this, I found that there is an issue with launching URL from an AHK program (FP is developed using this scripting language) when the default browser is Firefox. See: http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/16478-firefox-as-default-browser-problem-running-url/
A solution has not been indentified in this post. I'll have to do more research.
@Frederecik: Could you tell us what is your default browser?
@Horst: If Firefox is already launched, do you still get the error?
Thanks for reporting this issue.
Yes, the error comes also when Firefox is already running.
OK. I'll test is tonight on my home PC: change my default browser to Firefox (I use Chrome, for now), see if I can reproduce the issue, then look for a workaround.
Hum... I changed my default browser to Firefox (v35.0, Win 7) and was not able to reproduce this issue (reboot included). I could try to code a workaround for this issue by I would have no way to test it actually...
Just to make sure that this is specific to FP, could you try to launch an URL from the Run Windows dialog box (Win-R)? Normally, the command used by FP to launch the browser is the same as the Windows Run command.
Hello Jean,
there is no problem running the URL from the Windows Run dialog.
I also have Autohotkey installed and compiled a script with
!d::run http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup/
return
No problems, in every case the default browser (Firefox) starts.
So there is something wrong in FP ?
There must be something wrong. But what if it works for other users?
Let's check other places in FP where URL are run. Can you:
- create an URL favorite and launch it
- click on any link in the "Support Freeware" dialog box (right-click on the Tray icon to open it)
Do these links open in Firefox?
Thank you for your time.
All these links are working fine including a Favorite URL entry.
This must be something silly because this part of the FP code is so simple that I can't see what could be wrong. But I'll write a debug version of FP and send you the link by email if you can run it and send me back the debug file? I will do it tonight.
OK, I think we got it. It was a silly thing (kind of typo) that impacted only some browsers. I was not able to reproduce it myself but Horst confirmed that the issue was fixed in a test release. This fix will be included in v4.2.2 to be released in a near future.
Thank you Horst for your help.

I get the popup with message:

Check the .exe file path for "AppPath" in FCConnect ini file:

Perhaps it is because I am trying to use the non free version of xyplorer.
Hi Frederick,
Support on FPconnect is available on the FPconnect addon here:
http://blog.rolandtoth.hu/post/106133423662/fpconnect-for-folderspopup-windows
Roland knows much more than me all these file managers.
Thanks.
For the record, Fredrick's issue with FPconnect was solved by Roland.
Revisiting feature requests and planning for v5, I came back to this idea of using a right-click or keyboard modifier to open folders and restore their original position and size. Right-clicking could not be detected using standard Windows menus. But, looking back at this idea, what I could do is detect key states of Ctrl, Shift or Alt keys at the moment user choose a menu item. When user choose a favorite in FP menu while pressing a given modifier key, FP could do some specific actions, such as restore the original window position and size.
More precisely...
1) When the user add a favorite folder, an option allows to record the current size and position of the Explorer window (and min/max state?). Then...
2) When the user choose a favorite in a *new* Explorer window (with Shift-MMB), if position/size are memorized, the new Explorer window is moved at these position and size.
3) When the user open the FP menu with MMB alone, the menu is shown and...
3.1) If user select a favorite as usual -> the folder is loaded in the current Explorer
or
3.2) If user press the Control key as he select a favorite in the menu, the folder is loaded in the current Explorer *and* the window is restored at its original location/size.
This technique could also be used for other feature requests:
- "Shift-Click a favorite in menu" to copy the path of the selected favorite folder to the clipboard
- "Shift-click Add this folder" to execute an "express" addition (saving the current folder in the main menu using the deepest folder name as favorite name)
Other ideas like these will come up, I'm sure!
Hi, i came across a light bug where making a "favori" on executable : When launching by FP, the executable start but don't show the datas expected as it don't find them.
After investigating, i found that (seeing from the executable itself) the program folder is ok but the data folder is still the FP folder (should be the same as the program folder)
I think that, when launching an executable, the data folder should be actualised accordingly. Maybe this leads to a new type of favoris to manage executables (to add the data folder, start maximized, ...)
NB : i found this using Mempad from Horst Schaeffer (http://www.horstmuc.de/wmem.htm) that show the 2 folders by the "About" menu.
Hi starwolf,
I would not call it a bug because you are trying to use a feature designed for documents, not to launch executables :-)
But you are not alone using FP as an application launcher and adding the "Application" type of favorite is on the wishlist. Following your suggestion, I will make sure that the working directory will be configurable.
In the mean time, the would be a workaround. You could create a shortcut to your app in which you would set the working directory. Then, in FP, create a Document favorite and enter the path and filename of the shortcut file (.lnk). Let me know if you have trouble doing that, I could give more details.
Hi starwolf,
The new beta version v4.9.2 adds a new favorite type for applications that support working directory ("Start in") and parameters (argument string). Please see details here:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v5-beta-tests/
This new feature is now in public release v5.0.
I released a bug fix release. If you use environment variables (%windir%, %appdata%, etc.) in your favorite paths, upgrade is highly recommended.
Version: 4.2.2 (2015-01-31)
* Fix a bug with environment variables not being expanded when checking if target file exist.
* Fix bug under XP during group load when an Explorer already contains the target folder, the existing Explorer is now activated and resized.
* Fix bug with check for update URL on some browsers.
Version 4.2.3 ZIP contains version 4.2.2 or the internal numbering is wrong. Anyway - I'm in an endless update loop.
Thanks for reporting this error quickly, Jörg. Version 4.2.4 fixes this.
Hi there!
I'm trying Folder PopUp 4.2.2. I like it very much, great work.
We have the following options to add an item:
Folder
Speciak Folder
Document
Link (URL)
Submenu
But we don't have the option to add a favorite program (.exe item)
I mean an option to ad a .exe file: For example notepad2.exe.
I've added the links to this items by simple drag & drop. and worked but...
in some files don't work (The program seems to freeze), so I added the link with te
option add document and also work in some cases,
but... I have a program named Cathy (http://www.mtg.sk/rva/)
and I added the link by drag & drop an also as document, and the link is working but Cathy
don't load tways)he database (Cathy is working OK when I call it fom others.
I think may be the problem is in Folder PopUp program.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards.
Mario Guillermo Macri
Hi Mario,
The new favorite type "Application" is planned for one of the next releases. It will support working directory and parameters for the best flexibility. Stay tuned.
Thank you for your input.

Hi Jean,
I started using FoldersPopup 3 months ago and now I'm addict to it. I really love the 'Current Folders' function. 'Win+A' followed by 'C' become my usual habit now.
I would be nice if 'Current Folders' can get a direct hotkey, something like Win+Shift+C, in the same manner that 'Recent Folders' has Win+Shift+R.
Thank you for a great software.
Best,
kikujimoji
Thanks for your good words and your suggestion, kikujimoji. This is added to the wish-list. I will also add Shift-Win-G for the "Groups of Folders" menu.
Hi kikujimoji,
This is done in v5 to be released in a few days. You can test it in the last beta version

Hello!
Thank you for this tool! I just installed it on Win7Pro64 and I encountered a problem
* Adding the current folder does not work. The adress-bar flashes several times, then the message is displayed that the current folder can not be fetched from this kind of window. It then asks whether I would like to add the folder manually. (retranslated from german language)
But I am invoking this function from within windows explorer!?!?
Could it be that "classic explorer" from the great software "Classic Shell" is the reason?
* Also I can not change the mouse action to invoke folderpopup from standard middle-click to mouse-wheel left or right. Nothing happens ....
Hope somebody knows a solution to these problems. Many thanks in advance.
Sepl
Hi Sepl,
With Classic Explorer installed, the "Add this folder" FP menu only works with the "normal" Title bar configuration.
In Classic Explorer: Settings > Advanded > Title Bar
Normal history : WORKS
Simple path: does not work
Extended path: does not work
Regarding left/right wheel, it could be because of your mouse drive not supporting it?
Hello,
I've just discovered FoldersPopup and it seems great.
Is it possible to go directly to a folder whose path is in the clipboard as text? I mean if you have a path in the Windows clipboard (for example 'd:\downloads\games\', add this path temporary in the menu).
Thanks,
Laurent
Thank you for your suggestion, Laurent. This is added to the wish-list.
A few notes or questions:
– Adding a menu on the fly puts the added menu at the end of the menu (unless I rebuild the menu which would cause an unwanted delay before showing). If we want the clipboard menu at a specific location, it must be created at startup and updated/enabled/disabled at will at each call to the menu.
– Assuming the clipboard menu would be permanent, what if when the popup menu is called, the clipboard does not contain a file or folder? Should the previous menu be kept or should the entry be disabled?
– I would add an option for users who would not want this new menu entry.
Hello,
- I think it would be better if placed at a specific location with update.
- Instead of disabling if not containing a valid file/folder path as text, just keep previous one (no update).
Great you seems to agree with this idea ;-)
Hi Laurent,
The new beta version v4.9.2 adds a new Clipboard submenu. Please see details here:

I like FoldersPopup very much. One thing that I think might have been overlooked is an escape key. I have a number of utilities and occasionally I will accidently launch FoldersPopup. The only way to escape is to choose a path, then close it manually. I would expect that either the Esc Key would close it, or that an option on the dialog would allow it to exit. It's a minor issue, but I've done it a number of times.
Thank you.
Hi Robert. I'm not sure I get your point. The Esc key will close the popup menu and will close the Settings window.
Hi Jean,
I cannot put a finger on it, but occasionally I also have the experience that FP somehow looses focus and does not catch the pressing of the escape button. When it happens, the main FP menu remains visible, even when making another window active and only clicking on one of the items in the FP menu removes it (and then, as Robert Willams states, one has to cancel the action that was initiated by clicking on the menu item)
remarkable ... what was missing in all of us and we were looking for so long.
Thank you Mark !
