Folders Popup lets you move like a breeze between your frequently used folders and documents!
Download
Absolutely free to download and use, for personal or commercial use.
Easy one-step installation
- Download, execute this exe file and just follow the setup instructions.
Note - If you upgrade from a v3 installation: Before upgrading using the new setup tool follow these instructions to preserve your previous configuration: Update from a v3 (or older) version using the new setup tool. - Enjoy! And if you get a virus or malware alert from your anti-virus or protection software about Folders Popup being a potential threat, this is not the case (you can trust me... or read this independent report :-). Please, also read this post: How to stop Anti-virus blocking Folders Popup.
Portable installation
Follow these instructions if you want to use Folders Popup in "portable" mode. This will, for example, allow you to run it from an external drive or USB key. You'll just need to unzip a file.
- Download this zip file.
- Just extract the executable (.EXE) from the zip file to the folder of your choice.
Note: It is recommended not to install Folders Popup in system-protected folders like those under “C:\Program Files”. This could prevent FP from saving your configuration. - Run the .EXE file from this folder (choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version depending on your system). Folders Popup will create and update the folderspopup.ini file in this folder. See Folders Popup is a Portable App, below.
- At your convenience, create a shortcut on your Desktop or select Run at Startup in the System Tray to launch Folders Popup automatically at startup.
Note: Again, if an anti-virus or protection software reports Folders Popup as a potential threat, this is not the case. Please read this post: How to stop Anti-virus blocking Folders Popup.

Folders Popup is a Portable App
A portable application (portable app), sometimes also called standalone, is a program designed to run on a compatible computer without being installed in a way that modifies the computer's configuration information. This type of application can be stored on any storage device, including internal mass storage and external storage such as USB drives – storing its program files and any configuration information and data on the storage medium alone (source: Wikipedia).
Specifically, when installed using the Portable installation procedure, Folders Popup does not write any information in the Windows registry or in any system or temporary Windows folder. Running the .EXE file launches Folders Popup in its current directory. That's it! The app creates a temporary subdirectory (named _temp) to store small images and language files required at run time. This folder is deleted when the app quits. The only permanent files created by Folders Popup are the FoldersPopup.ini file containing your favorite folders and options and, if you select the Run at Startup option, the FoldersPopup.lnk file in your Startup folder.
To completely remove Folders Popup from a PC, delete the folder where you are running the app (preserve the FoldersPopup.ini file if you plan to re-use it) and delete the file FoldersPopup.lnk from your C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

Lovely and very handy program, so don't hesitate to give some support!
Hope I could donate more, but times are lean. Great software, and thanks!
There are no little donations! Thanks you for your support, Pablo.
For several years I've used a folders utility we might call "DF." It basically worked, but had idiosyncrasies and would sometimes quit, the only solution for which was a reboot. FoldersPopUp seems pretty solid.
I'm happy to read it. Thank you for your support Jere.
FoldersPopup is one of those apps that you did not know you needed it till you try it out. It is quite a handy little program.
Thanks Ray McKee
Thank you, Ray, for your comment and for your support :-)
Very nice program indeed. Ought to be standard in Windows.
Thanks to you, Ulf, for your support :-)
@Paul Hunter: Thank you for reporting this "false positive" to AVG.
I moved your comment to the page dedicated to this subject:
How to stop Anti-virus blocking Folders Popup
Good news ! AVG whitelisted Folders Popup (put FP on the safe apps list). This mean that FP should not be blocked by AVG anti-virus and PC protection software. For more info, see the link above.
Hi ! Everyone, many improvements have be done :) since my last reply. Thanks a lot Jean, very good work. Well, I have some request :). I see there are slots for dopus and total commander, I wonder if there is a possibility to set a slot too for Freecommander XE 64bits.
thanks
Thank you for your good words, faninatiako. You can make FP work with FC XE using FPconnect.
FPconnect is an universal file manager connector for Folders Popup from Roland Toth (https://github.com/rolandtoth/FPconnect).
This Folders Popup addon allows integration of any file manager that supports commandline navigation. Thanks to tpr (Roland’s nickname). Support on FPconnect is available on Roland’s blog.
Ok, thanks for advice
Hi! I'm just wondering: is there a way to add a color scheme to FoldersPopup? I've been wanting to add a scheme for a while, and, well, I looked into the .ini file and saw entries for supported schemes. So, I thought I could just copy one, rename it and change the colors. It did not work. I closed the program from the task bar (right word, please!) then re-opened it. The option *still* wasn't there. So, is it possible? If so, how?
BTW, I really like your program! It really helps. :) Sorry I can't give you money. :(
Please read this: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/about-folders-popup-color-themes/
Thanks for your good words.
Thank you for this nice little tool. Although I already own DirectFolders and ListaryPro I like FolderPopup for its portability, running it from stick when I am on the road. The column break is great, too. Makes up for the wasted space that Settings and FreewareSupport steal away. I wish I could exile these 2 to some other place (tray)
Hi Stefan. Sorry, I missed your comment on the "Donation - Thank you" page. I can't see why its email alert felt in my spam folder. As I always do with comments on this page, I moved it here.
I'm taking note of your comment about the "waste of space" for Settings and Freeware Support. As you now know, the freeware menu is removed for donor. For the other one, I'm thinking of a way to give more flexibility for FP menus. Noted on the wish-list for a future version.
Thank you, Jean
yes, the freeware entry is gone now. I was not aware of this when I wrote the comment, it became clear later when receiving the donation confirmation.
Today, I released a new version to fix minor bugs. Thanks to Horst and Oliver for helping on this.
Version: 5.0.1 (2015-04-10)
* Change default hotkeys for Current Folders (Shift-Control-F), Groups of Folders (Shift-Control-G), Recent Folders (Shift-Control-R), Clipboard (Shift-Control-C) and Settings (Shift-Control-S) for Windows 8.1 compatibility.
— Note that this will not change the hotkeys for users upgrading to this version; use the Reset default hotkey in the Change hotkey dialog box to use the new shortcuts.
* Fix bug with special folders Pictures and Favorites (Internet) when user change these folders default location.
See download links at the top of this page.
Excellent outil.
It supports ampersand accelerator keys - GREAT.
Right-clicking an entry seems to be still avaliable. Would be a nice addition to offer EDIT on right-click, to jump to that item's definition (= highlighting it in the settings dialog) - instead of having to browse for that item/submenu position on the settings-dialog.
Another section in the right-click menu (below separator) could offer
- Copy location to clipboard
- Type at the keyboard insertion point
This way we could have both options to make the decision in real time.
Hi Stefan,
The suggestion of right-clicking a menu entry in the FP menu has been expressed earlier. The problem is that I can't find with the development tools I'm using (AHK) how to detect a right-click in the FP menu.
The idea I had earlier (but not implemented yet) is to create a special menu trigger (like Alt-Middle Click) that would allow alternate functions like the ones you describe.
> Copy location to clipboard
This feature is available in the current beta version (http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v51-beta-tests/). This should be official release v5.1 within a week or two from now.
> Type at the keyboard insertion point
This won't be available. But you will be able to copy to the clipboard and paste the clipboard at the insertion point.
Thanks for your ideas.
Thanks Jean,
The option "Type at the keyboard insertion point" works over here. I use it in "Browse for folder" dialogs as a workaround for the missing direct call-up.
Maybe some future version of AHK will enable you to support those open/add dialogs as well. And maybe even the right-click menu. Until then, I can live with my workaround, no problem. It's still better than running DF in parallel, thus having to maintain 2 databases of favorites. And DF is not portable, anyway.
Hi,
Lovely bit of software. Was using df till recently but this knocks its socks off.
Is there a way to integrate it with Opera so that programs/explorer can be started whilst browsing?
Thanks Jean
Hi j,
I.m sorry but I don't understand your request. Could you be more specific or give an example?
Basically to get the middle click to override opera (or any window that is being used) so that fp can be accessed with mmc.
For some reason - I've been using your software for a few days now and its overtaken my use of the computer (in a good way).
In Opera, the MMB is used to scroll the web page. Other browsers also use this button for scroll. FP does ot interfere with applications using the MMB.
To popup the FP menu over the Opera window or any window that is not an Explorer, file dialog box or Shell (CMD), you need to press Shift-MMB. MMB and Shift-MMB hotkeys can be changed in the Options. You could change the Shift-MMB trigger for MMB (without the Shift) but, then, FP would interfere/block the use of MMB in other apps.
Hope this helps. And thanks for your good words :-)
Thank you Jean.
Muchly appreciated.
This makes things so much faster.
Version 5.1 is now available. See the Download section at the top of this page.
Also, please read these important news about the future of Folders Popup (do not worry - this is good news ;-)
Love this app. I just donated because I have been using it for 6+ months and I just realized how much I use it on a daily basis and how much I rely on it now.
Thank you Shawn for your comment and your well appreciated donation!
Hi
thank you for your very useful application
and i am have suggestion please add option for disable hotkey in some situation for example when in Google Earth !
tnx
Hi mohammadi,
Thank you for your good words. I added your suggestion to the Quick Access Popup wishilist. QAP will be the next generation of Folders Popup - more info here: http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/
I'll look at your request. I see how I could maintain an exclusion list of apps. I'll have to do some tests/research to see if I can also exclude on specific websites. Thanks for the suggestion. You can vote for it on QAP website: http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/in-options-an-exclusion-list-to-disable-hotkey-in-some-application-or-website/

Horst Epp:
Hello Jean,
I would like to see some way (hotkey modifier) to start an entry with enhanced rights
Jean:
Hi Horst,
What kind of “enhanced rights” ?
Horst Epp:
Hello Jean,
the one with triggers the UAC
Jean:
I think I see. I’m not an expert on UAC and privileges admin. But, from what I know, an app cannot “promote” itself to elevated rights (such as admin). The app app has to be “Run as administrator” to be able to perform admin tasks.
Thank you for a year of streamlined traversing of windows and dialog boxes!
Thanks for your support, Jere :-)
Another post lost while moving it from one page to the other. Sorry about that...
From David:
How to I make a master folder so I can save all my work link there and make a 2nd master folder for my home link something like where you can organize your favorites in IE
I am using (testing) the portable version as I can't install anything on the client PC
Jean:
Hi David,
There is no "master folder" per say in FP. But, since you use the portable version, you could install it in two different folders: one for your work and one for home. Each folder would have its own folderspopup.ini file that holds all your settings (favorites, preferecnes, etc.). Then, you could launch one or the other depending what set of favorites you want. Let me know if this does not answer your questions.
Perfect application ! Saves time and makes working with commonly used ( and most of the time deeply specified ) directories a lot easier with just a single click ! Many Thanks !!! Greetings from Germany ;-)
Thank you Felix. Much appreciated!
Thank you. This has become an essential program for me. I appreciate the continuing updates too.
Thanks to you Rob. Sorry, I did not reply earlier. Have a good day!
Hi
Your application is great! The only missing thing is dynamic subfolders. You should add a feature to allow the user to add a dynamic folder. For example, if you add you C:\ as dynamic folder, the first submenu item under C:\ is "Open this folder" and under this, you list all the subfolders of the C:\ drive. If you select the subfolder "Windows", the "Open this folder" option will be listed the all the subfolders under C:\Windows, etc.
This feature is present in the software "Folder Menu" (http://foldermenu.sourceforge.net/) but this software is a little buggy. If you implement this on your software, it will become the best software of that kind.
Thank you!
Je peux tout t'expliquer en français aussi si ce n'est pas assez clair!
Merci
Bonjour Sébastien,
Thank you for your good words.
This is a good suggestion. I'll add it to the Quick Access Popup project wishlist (http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/category/wishlist/). This is where is developed the next generation of Folders Popup.
Jean
I have the same request. But I use the buggy MenuApp (http://www.desktopapps.co.uk/menuApp.php).
Hi Anjan. This suggestion is noted on this wishlist:
http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/dynamic-submenu-listing-subfolders-in-the-current-folder/
Hi,
Here are some new feature suggestions :
- Add a setting to hide paths that are not working (for example, when a USB drive not connected to the computer). Also add an option to hide empty submenus (if all paths under a submenu are hidden also hide the submenu). Those needs to be 2 different settings.
- Add a setting to enable/disable an item instead of having to delete those items.
- Add a setting to hide the "FolderPopup Settings" item on the menu.
Thank you!
Sébastien
Noted. Please post additional suggestions to Quick Access Popup website. This is where Folders Popup next generation is built.
You can also vote for your preferred suggestions in the wishlist. Thanks.
Hello Jean,
I am contacting you to advise you that I have had a problem with your Folders Popup free software. I am using Win. 8.1.
Most importantly, when upgrading to a new release, I downloaded the new release but found that I lost many of my important links to websites and programs that I was using. That was most disappointing and very frustrating. That should not have happened. Do you not have a method to *preserve* the former links for a former version of Folders Popup? Do we have to always lose some of our links that take time and much energy to replace?
Also, I found that Folders Popup froze when you announced that you had a new version 5.1. I could not gain access to any programs any further at that point.
So, those two things need to be corrected to make your software one of the best that it is capable of becoming. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon on this!
Hi Lan,
What you describe does not happen for all other users. I would have heard before :-) We have to find out what specific action or configuration is causing this behavior in your environment.
About your first issue, did you use the standard "Setup" installer or did you prefer the "portable" install? Diagnostic and solution will depend on this.
For your second issue, I could not tell. Normally, you would click on "Yes" and it would launch your browser to the app's home page. Else, it would close the dialog box and launch FP normally.
Jean
Hi Jean, Thanks for answering. Regarding the first issue, I went to the following website where I found Folders Popup for free use. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/folderspopup.html
I then clicked on "Download Folders Popup" which then goes directly to the "setup.exe" file directly at your website. It was thus downloaded.
As to the second issue, I don't understand it either but I have FP version 5.1 now installed and am hoping for the best but frankly after this experience I am afraid that when you upgrade to the next version I might lose my items as well. I hope not. I don't understand why it froze since that has never happened with any other program and my computer OS is quite new.
Thanks again, Jean, and I hope there is an answer to these questions. You have a *great product* and if I can find the "why" for these two things happening I will be able to enjoy FP even more!
Hi Lan,
If you installed the app with the folderspopup-setup.exe file, the executable file is installed under the "C:\Program Files\..." directory and the configuration file (folderspopup.ini) containing your favorites is saved under your "User" folder, for example: "C:\Users\jlalonde\AppData\Roaming\FoldersPopup". When you install a newer version of FP, the folderspopup.ini file is *never* erased or overwritten. You should never have to re-enter your config.
I'm sorry but I can't tell why you lost your config. What I suggest for the next time you want to upgrade, is to make a backup of the ini file. An easy way is to right-click the Tray icon and choose the "FoldersPopup.ini" menu. This will open the file in Notepad. Then, use the "Save As" menu to make your backup. If whenever you loose your config, you should be able to copy the backup file in your User directory (probably "C:\Users\YOUR-NAME\AppData\Roaming\FoldersPopup"). But this should *not* be required.
(Side note for those who install the "portable" version: Make sure you install the upgrade in the same folder where FP is running keeping the existing folderspopup.ini file. This file is be preserved when you install run the new version.)
Hope this helps,
Jean
Thanks Jean! I will take your recommendations in the hope that if I run into future problems I will be able to retain my configuration as in the .ini file. I appreciate your help in this matter.
Folders Popup works great. I am using a utility "System Scheduler" to start it (as I mainly use portable apps on different machines - folders Popup works well with this mix).
Often when it starts it begins in the folder form the last app started (so withinout the proper .ini), which I thought must be a problem with the scheduler not folders popup. Now if is saying it is loaded from a read-only folder & closes. running it again in either case fixes the problem.
This is, as I said, probably not a folders popup problem, but a timing issue with the scheduler, but is there a parameter to force the loading of the correct .ini file?
Hi Chris. Yes there is an option. When FP is started as is, it read the ini file in the "current" folder. But when it is launched via a Windows shortcut (which is the case when user select the "Run at startup" option - this shortcut is in the user's startup folder), FP will read the ini file in the "Start In" folder as stated in the shortcut. Hope this help.
Then it is definitely not your problem, as the scheduler lets me specify a startup folder - so Folders Popup must be being run outside my designated folder. I'll look at that now.
Great application by the way.
Jean,
Have been using/supporting "FolderPopup" for well over a year now and use it every day. Thanks for a great product!
Ken
Thank you for your support, Ken :-)
Ahoi,
most of the enhancements for Windows I dislike because I prefer to modify Windows basic functionalities (eg. "Send to" menu or shortcuts. But Folder Popup is a thing I won't live without anymore ;)
Thank you for creating that!

Thank you Bernhard for your good words and for your donation. Well appreciated!
A great and very useful application, a must have app, definitely. Thanks for your effort :-)
Thank you Peni for your comment and your support :-)
A little suggestion:
Open a folder in a new window with right click in normal popup
Sorry for my english, i'm spanish
Hi Peni,
No problem with your English. As a francophone, I can understand you :-)
Thank you for your suggestion. This was taken into account in the upgrade to Quick Access Popup that I'm working on (see http://www.QuickAccessPopup.com). Unfortunately, supporting right-click in Windows menus is something tricky to implement and, at this point, I'm looking for alternative solutions like, for example, "shift-clicking" in a menu or a special hotkey to offer various flavors of actions like "open favorite". Stay tuned to QAP website for info on this later.
And, just to be sure you know, you can already open a FP favorite in a new window by using the Shift-Middle Mouse Button (or Shift-Windows-A) trigger to open the FP menu.
Bye,
Jean
>And, just to be sure you know, you can already open a FP favorite in a new window by using the Shift-Middle Mouse Button >(or Shift-Windows-A) trigger to open the FP menu.
I know :-)
>I’m looking for alternative solutions like, for example, “shift-clicking”
It's also ok for me, tanks! :-)
Hi Jean,
I love FoldersPopup, thanks for your efforts!
I have just one little issue that's bugging me: FP always opens a new tab in Clover, there seems to be no way to re-use the current tab. Do you have any suggestions on how to achieve that or is there any chance that you implement this tiny feature in the next release?
And can I contact via E-Mail to ask for your IBAN bank account? I'd like to contribute, but don't want to give my data to PP/Share-it.
Thanks,
P.
Thanks to you for your comment.
You are right. Actually, FP works with Clover but folders are always open in a new tab. Working on Quick Access Popup (FP's next generation), I tried something that work well for me. I'll implement it in FP 5.1.2 (to be release later Today, I think). Please, let me know if it works well for you too.
> And can I contact via E-Mail to ask for your IBAN bank account? I’d like to contribute, but don’t want to give my data to PP/Share-it.
Doing electronic transfers with Canadian banks is not easy. I'll contact you by email.
Hi Jean,
wow, wonderful, thanks for that quick fix! Works like a charm now in v 5.1.2!
Thanks for your e-mail, too. I'll think about it :)
Cheers,
Phil
How to add a item for navigate to parent folder of current? I tryed with .. but not works
Hi Peni,
Relative paths (with "..", for example) are supported for folder, document or applications favorites but they are relative to the current FP working directory, not the directory where you called the FP menu. This feature makes it possible to build a set of favorites working on a portable device (for example on an USB key), regardless of the letter assigned to this portable device. This being done, what you would like could not be implemented.
For those interested in the actual implementation of relative paths, please read the note at the end of this comment: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopup-v51-beta-tests/#comment-12792
Ok, thanks
A possible addition to this wonderful program. One could have FP able to open with a single click both the left and right panels of most file managers, with specific locations in each, by allowing one - when one chooses to add a folder to the FP menu - to specify two folders to open (a subordinate one as well as the main one), and by having FPconnect allow the use of two parameters, %Path1% and %Path2%.
Hi Fred,
Not sure at what extent this would respond to you request but you should take a look to the "Groups" feature already implemented in FP. BTW, this feature will be greatly improved in Quick Access Popup (next generation of Folders Popup).
Thanks for your suggestion.
Jean
Hi, it seems github (https://github.com/JnLlnd/FoldersPopup) page is not updated. Can it be updated?
Also, if you don't have Chinese yet, I would like to contribute the translation to Chinese. :-)
Thanks for the great App!
Hi Jess,
I just updated the GitHub repo. I would be happy to have a Chinese translation but it will be only for the next major version of the app (see http://www.quickaccesspopup.com) in a few months.
Please read the Translation info page here and confirm your interest by leavins a comment on that page.
Thanks!
Hi, Jean. I checked and didn't see the update @Github yet.
I have left a message to the translation page.
thanks
Oh, I see my error. I'll have to do a little fix before I can publish. Sorry for the delay. I'll do it over the week-end.
Thanks for your translation offer !
Now, the repository is really updated :-)
Very nice helping tool. May I can ask for an new feature or perhaps it is already exiting. I'm looking for the possibility to define Key Short-cuts per item. The idea to start e.g. explorer in an defined folder by typing a shortcut.
Perhaps there is an alternative way, please let me know.
Thanks and
Hi Carsten,
Yes, in a near future. Please read:
http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/add-mouse-or-keyboard-shortcuts-for-favorites/
and the firsts news on the home page.
Jean
I tried to create a shortcut to open a document excel. When I click the shortcut and launch the installation .exe file. The path is correct and the excel file is running. W10 and use office2010. what can I do ???
Hi Lucio,
Normally, if XL file types (.xls or .xlsx) are correctly configured, all you have to do is to enter the document full path and file name in the favorite dialog box. XL does not have to run before you activate the menu. Maybe you should check your file extension configuration.
Jean
It's great tool, helped me a lot .
I wish you add double click left button to make it easier.
You do a great job .
Thanks.
Thank you dynastye. Unless I miss something, I could not re-assign the left button double-click as it is already used by most software.
Thanks for such a useful program. Looking forward to see what Quick Access Popup has in store.
Thanks to you, Mike :-)
Hello Jean - I just found Folders Popup on SnapFiles and I love it. One request is that I would like to be able to add two options to open with the mouse. Double click the right mouse button and add to the context menu when the left mouse button is clicked.
Thanks.
Hi Marc,
Thanks you for your input and for your good words. I have in my plans for Quick Access Popup (next generation of Folders Popup http://www.quickaccesspopup.com) to add a menu item "Add this Folder" to folder's contextual menus. On the other hand, I'm not sure my tools allow me to track double-clicks on the right mouse button. But, first, I would need to better understand what would be the action resulting from this double-click?
Jean
Hi Jean,
Thank you for FoldersPopup, a tool that I really appreciate. I have recently upgraded from W7 to W10 and now I think I found a bug in your program however. Background: I have FoldersPopup installed in the download folder of my computer using the 5.1.2 version. If I choose "create new folder" within the download folder there are two folder icons, if I click on one of these the window turns black and the explorer process must be terminated through the task manager. This does not happen if go to the download folder using windows explorer.
I hope I am not wasting your time with something unique to my system and also hope for a remedy.
Hi Ulf,
At first view, it is hard to say how FP would be involved in an issue when you create a new folder, an operation where FP has nothing to do. Or maybe there is something I don't get.
This being said, I would recommend to run FP from another folder than the Download folder. Sometimes, security in system folders may prevent FP from creating its working files. Try running it from another folder or use the setup install (that installs FP under your Program Files and creates a working folder under Users folder) to see if the issue is still present.
Thanks you for your good words.
Jean
Thanks Jean,
I have been looking over your site and I think that it is really well done. I watched some of the tutorial videos and they helped allot. For the question about the action resulting from a double click, I would like for the same window to appear as when I click the center mouse button. Same for the context menu. I think that it would be nice to be able to choose in the Menu Hotkeys-> Mouse button for FP menu to open folders in the current Explorer window or dialog box. (Hope this makes sense).
Hi Marc,
I understand what you suggest. I'm taking note of your suggestions in the QuickAccessPopup wishlist.
See http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/display-the-qap-popup-menu-on-double-right-click/
And this: http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/trigger-the-popup-menu-from-the-explorer-or-file-dialog-box-context-menu/
Thanks again!
Thanks Jean,
I have another suggestion / request. Under the Display Menus option in settings, it would be nice to have an option that would display all of the drives.
Marc
Hi Mark. Would you post your new suggestion to the Quick Access Popup wishlist since this is where the new development is going on. http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/favorites-popup-wishlist/
I copied this one -> http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/favorites-popup-wishlist/#comment-705
and I added a question.
Thanks!
I'm trying out your program as a replacement for "Folder Menu 3" which has similar functionality but is no longer updated. I like what I see so far except for one problem, none of the menu items display their icons. In the Options - General tab I see a checkbox for "Display Menu Items" but the box is disabled. I've installed in on Windows 2008 Server 64-bit.
Correction: ...the checkbox is for “Display Menu Icons” (not "Items").
Hi Ed,
Menu icons are not available in Windows Server versions. The location (index) of icons in Windows Server icon files (shell32.dll and imageres.dll) differs greatly from those in client versions. Since the number of users of the Server version is pretty low, I put this issue aside and Windows Server users were still satisfied with the FP features even withous icons. Hope you will too :-)
Jean
The application will show an error message when I copy a very big amount of data into the memory and then call the application. I guess the "Copy" function cause the error?
Hi Kenny,
At what moment does FP show the error message? What data do you copy in the clipboard? Text or binary data (like image)? And what do you mean by "very big".
Thanks for helping solving that.
Hi Jean
Could you please implement a small feature :
I noticed that the FolderPopop.ini is only read one time (at startup time). If I manually edit the file, I have to close and restart FolderPopup to see my changes.
I would be really usefull to add a feature that verify is FolderPopup.ini has changed before showing the application. If the file has changed (check file size and modified date), then reload the configuration.
This will allow the user to edit FolderPopup.ini on the fly using a script (a logon script for example).
Thank you!
Hi Sébastien,
This is a good idea. I'll add it to the Quick Access Popup wishlist. From now on, new features like this will be implemented in this new version of my app (actually in beta test).
Thanks for the suggestion.
Folders Popup is a must, a great missing feature in Windows.
Before upgrading to Windows 10, I was using "Direct Folders", it does not work well with the new Windows.
I am glad to have discovered Folders Popup and you deserve to be better known.
Thanks for your work
Merci pour cet excellent travail !
JF from Belgium
Merci Jean-François :-)
Yes! Finally an open-source and free alternative! Thank you Jean!
:-)
I am in the process of moving to your program from Direct Folders. So far Folders Popup seems much easier to configure and better on the eyes than what was for years my favourite. I have it running (so far very well) in Windows 10 64 bit (OS running from its own SSD) with Directory Opus. I will report again once I get some further experience with this software.
Hi Ray.
Thank you for your message. As you are moving to a new app you may be interested in moving right now to Quick Access Popup, the "next generation" of Folders Popup. It is now in beta stage but quite stable. Available in English and French at this time. If you are interested, please read the info and find the download links on this page:
http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/welcome-to-quick-access-popup-beta-test/
Jean
Hi! I'd like to help you translate your FoldersPopup app into Russian language (as a native Russian speaker, who knows English quite well)! So, could this be useful?
Hi Arthur,
Your offer is very welcome! However, I'm now working on the next version of Folders Popup that is distributed under the name Quick Access Popup. I would like to invite you to translate QAP to Russian.
Please, read the info on the QAP translation page and confirm you interest when you are ready.
Jean
Hi
It would be great in a future version, to add the possibility to choose more themes (colors)
May be with a color picker to select it?
Thanks a lot
Hi Mario,
I'm taking note of your suggestion.
But you can already add your own themes in the FoldersPopup.ini file. Please, read these instructions: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/about-folders-popup-color-themes/
And you can use this color picker to choose your colors: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp

Salut Jean.
Jean
Hi there Jean
I posted this on the Portable Freeware page of Folders Popup, but I figured you'd be more likely to read it here.
"Some suggestions for this awesome program:
1. At the moment one can only add folder links. It would be great if there was support for adding browsable directories. Another program called LaunchbarCommander allows this and it's very efficient. I'm aware that one can add submenus, but there isn't recursive support, which means a lot of manual labour. My folders are arranged in such a way that adding only one or two directory links will give me quick access to almost all my files.
One thing I don't like about LC is that you can't click folder links directly in the recursive menus, only files, which means making a right-click and left click instead of only one left-click.
2. Add ability to hide the bottom contents of the menu (eg, folder groups, copy path, etc). Obviously the support freeware link can stay there, but I feel that the other stuff takes too much real estate, especially when they're not used very often. Perhaps they can also be put into their own submenu, by user choice."
Hi Shane,
1. I added this suggestion to the Quick Access Popup wishlist. Please, if you want to reply on this, do it on the wish page.
2. This is now as you wish in Quick Access Popup: all menu are configurable and special features are now available as the favorite type "QAP Features" that can be inserted in any menu. You can try it in its beta version or wait to the official release later in the next weeks.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Great Tool.
Now, try to make clear the use of 'FP connect' because the list of the available explorers is huge! There's FAR :)
Hi,
The custom file managers configuration has been much simplified in Quick Access Popup, the next release of Folders Popup. QAP is already available in beta stage (quite stable) here: http://www.quickaccesspopup.com.
FAR is new to me. It reminds me the apps of the old DOS times :-) like Norton Commander or XTree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XTree) :-) I asked my FPconnect expert if he know if/how it could be configured to be used with FP and QAP. Stay tuned.
Thanks for your input.
My mistake. I just realize that FAR *is* already in the list. But it is not in QAP yet. It will in the next beta release coming soon.
Thanks again.
Great utility and one of the first things I load onto a new PC. Thanks VERY much for the DOpus integration. Paypal donation heading your way.
Thank you, Larry, for your comment and your donation. If you like Folders Popup, you should *love* Quick Access Popup (http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/) the next generation of Folders Popup :-)
It is available in beta version if you want to test it. It is pretty stable and your FP favorites can be easily imported.
Jean
FoldersPopup is not multi-user. Please fix it to allow all users to use FoldersPopup as is supposed. Thanks.
When install with an administrator account, Folders Popup runs 'only' for that account. This makes FoldersPopUp the 'Single user account' instead of 'multiple-user' accounts, even though FoldersPopup appears on menu for 'all' users, including 'standard user' (i.e. non-administrator account.)
If login from another standard user account, running Folders Popup will produce the error:
It appears that FoldersPopup is running from a
WRITE-PROTECTED folder where the configuration file
"FoldersPopụpini" could not be created.
Move the FoldersPopup .EXE file to the REGULAR folder of your choice and re-run it from this folder.
FoldersPopup will quịt
Hi Dung phan,
The setup process has been improved to support multi user environment in the next version of Folders Popup, renamed Quick Access Popup (http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/). It is available in beta version if you want to test it. It is pretty stable and your FP favorites can be easily imported.

Is Folders Popup (last XP version) abandoned?
Today I have found autohotkey code for “Browse For Folder” dialogs mentioned here:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folderspopuparchives/#comment-350
Here is the app and the source:
http://totalcmd.net/plugring/TC_FavMenu2.html
I can see the code in dialogs.ahk, but I don't know how to implement it in Folders Popup. Oh well, I hope you will at least implement it in Quick Access Popup and maybe someday I will upgrade my XP to 7, or ...
“Browse For Folder” dialogs are implemented in Windows to torture people, seriously.
Hi Joe. I'm in vacation. I'll look at it when I'm back, 2nd half of March. Thanks for pointing to this code.
Hi Joe,
I looked at the AHK code you found. Not sure at what extent this 10-years old code can help me to design a solution that will also work with Windows 7+. But, when I get to work on this, it will be for Quick Access Popup (I added this item to the wishlist: http://www.quickaccesspopup.com/wishlist-support-select-folder-dialog-box-with-tree-view/).
> Is Folders Popup (last XP version) abandoned?
To answer your original question: no, FP is not abandoned. It is still supported in case bugs are found. But new features will only be added to QAP.
Thanks for your post,
Jean
I am wondering when the portable version will be upgraded from v5 to v7? Thank you.
Hi Joe. Quick Access Popup (aka FP v7) is available in both setup and portable version.
Hi Joe,
IT just got rather upset with me because they received this notification from Kaspersky Security Center:
Event "Malicious object detected" happened on computer xxxxx in the domain xxx on dinsdag 11 april 2017 15:42:08 (GMT+01:00)
Result: Detected: PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic
User: xxxx
Object: c:\users\xxxx\downloads\folderspopup\folderspopup-3_1_3-64-bit.exe
The install file has been sitting in my download folder since august 2015, so I'm surprised it's suddenly being flagged as a Trojan by Kaspersky.
You can read this
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/anti-virus-blocking-folders-popup/
Or this (QAP is the more recent version of FP)

Hi. I'm a user of folders popup
I have 2 problems after I updated windows 10 1803.
windows 10, 1803 version.
first problem.
when i use wheel click to open folder pop, after I push window logo button, it doesn't work
second problem.
After I used wheel click to open folder popup, and then I used another wheel click on background wallpaper, new folder popup menu doesn't open.
these 2 problems didn't happen on windows 10 1709 version.
so please help to sovle this problem. !
thanks a lot !
Hi Honni,
I'm running Windows 1709 myself. It is hard to help you. I cannot upgrade easily to the latest Win version. You are the first one reporting this issue both with Folders Popup or its newest version Quick Access Popup (http://www.QuickAccessPopup.com).
Searching the web, I found that there are some reported issues with the mouse and Windows 10 1803. See:
https://www.ghacks.net/2018/05/01/all-the-issues-of-windows-10-version-1803-you-may-run-into/

https://www.google.ca/search?q=windows+1803+middle+mouse+button
Maybe a mouse driver update would fix it or Microsoft will issue a patch for this. Sorry that I can't help more at this time. I posted this on Quick Access Popup support site. You may subscribe to this thread:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qap-support/Z_SM6Be_BPs
In the mean time, I suggest that you try other mouse buttons (Special 1 and 2 if your mous have these side buttons) or use the keyboard shortcut.
Jean
I highly recommend Long Path Tool it automatically deletes the folder you selected, including all its files and subfolders, regardless of their path length (even if they are in a network folder).
Me too tried Long Path Tool and find it helpful with this issue
I use windows xp sp 3 and I definitely do not want to go to windows 10.
When I open a folder on an empty desktop using Folders Popup then the navigation pane opens too!
Could you delete that function please? I mean the navigation pane on the left of the screen, I don't use it since the beginning of windows xp, because it takes space. This only happens when opening a folder on an empty desktop using Folders Popup.
See the list on the left, it keeps coming back when opening folders on the desktop using folders popup.

Hi.
Sorry but I could not do that. Folders Popup is not updated anymore and is kept available "as-is" only for those who must or prefer to stay with Win XP.

Oke I understand that you don't want to spend time on that older program anymore.
But what I cannot understand is.....
What is so special about Quick Access Popup that it cannot be made to function on windows xp?
Windows xp or windows 10, the windows and the folders work the same, you can open them and
you can link them.
Similar programs like QAP work on xp and on w10.
Folders Popup and Quick Access Popup interact quite deeply with Windows internal commands and many of them changed from XP to Win 7. When I rewrote FP into QAP, I just did not have an XP environment to test it and the time to check all the changes on both OS.
GreAT job, @Jean Lalonde.
Thank you!
