Bonjour Jean,
J'ajoute à la liste (reformulation anglaise: "Add group of folders to popup menu, on click would open a group of folders".
> ajouter dans la boîte de dialogue qui s’ouvre avec “Ajouter ce dossier au menu”, un menu déroulant qui proposerait les sous-menus déjà crée.
Ouil c'est déjà dans la liste. J'ai reporté cette fonctionnalité à la v2.1.
Merci pour les suggestions.
À propos de "Add group of folders", c'est dans la toute nouvelle version beta v3.9.1: FoldersPopup v4 ready for beta test – testers wanted.
Great program but how do I stop it sounding a tone from the speakers each time I select a folder?
Hello Fred,
This is not normal. First time this is reported. The sound is probably produced by Windows in reaction to a command sent by Folders Popup. Could you tell me more about your environment? Or, better, could I send you by email instruction on how to run FP in diagnostic mode?
Thanks for your comment.
Salut / Hi Jean.
My native language is French, but I write you in English, most of your fans/users are English.
I don't understand the utility of this section:
TIA and have a good evening! Merci Jean et bonne soirée!
Martin
Bonjour Martin,
French is my native language too. But let's continue in English for the majority of the users.
This section of the Settings window lists the dialog boxes where the folders popup menu will be available. The +, pen and X buttons are used to add, edit or remove entries in this list.
When you press the mouse middle button over a dialog box, Folders Popup must know if that dialog box is a file dialog box where you want to use the FP popup menu.
If one of the entries in the "Supported Dialog Boxes" list is included in the dialog box title, the popup menu is shown. If not, FP shows a special menu offering to add this dialog box with the menu "Add this Dialog Box to the supported list".
Jean
An update on this. Following a discussion about supported dialog boxes (http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/should-folders-popup-maintain-a-list-of-supported-dialog-boxes-2/), this matter will be much simplified in v3 (to be released in the 2nd half of August).
Hi,
you write about basic support of Directory Opus:
"basic support for Directory Opus v11.4 (navigate and add this folder)"
Could you please explain how I navigate with FoldersPopup 2.0.1 (64bit) and Directory Opus?
On my system Directory Opus (v11.4) is not configured as Windows Explorer Replace. Is it possible to open a folder from a FoldersPopup list (Middle Click) in Directory Opus? Currently it still opens Windows Explorer with the selected folder. Did I miss something? I didn't find an option to configure another "Explorer". Or is there some hidden trick?
Thanks in advance
Matidio
Hi Matidio,
I wrote a post about Directory Opus support on my blog. You can read this here:
http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/folders-popup-now-compatible-with-directory-opus/
If you have questions or comments, please use the comment box on this post. Thanks.
Hi, I love this little programme! Much better than all my own workarounds to find folders more quickly.
However, now some disappointment with using v2. It's too slow. There is really an annoying delay after the click and appearance of menu. Reverted back to v1. I hope you can find a cause and a fix. I am using a fully uptodate Windows7 machine.
Thank you for your comment. I suspect that this performance issue is specific to the "Recent Folders" menu. I know I have to work on this.
Could you disable this feature in "Settings / Options" and check is this solve the performance issue?
Thanks for quick comment. Will do (but it happened in all folders) and report back. It's only the case at my laptop. Desktop works fine.
I just released v2.0.2 that slightly improve "Recent Folders" menu building performance. This menu still needs to be refreshed each time you call the popup menu (causing this little delay). It would defeat the purpose if I was keeping the recent folders read at startup time...
On medium/fast PCs, this delay should not be significantly noticeable. But on slow ones, this could be annoying. In these case, you don't have to go back to v1. Just turn off "Recent Folders" in "Settings / Options".
> I love this little programme! Much better than all my own workarounds to find folders more quickly.
And thank you for this nice introduction :-)
Hi, i switched off the 'recent folders' option, which indeed gets rid of the delay in the folder popup. v2.02 has still same delay with 'recent folder' option switched on. So, must be something in my system (which as such is not slow) and 'something' that only makes the popup slow in version 2 and not version 1.
Anyway, happy to use the programme again.
This is certainly related to Recent Items because this is the only change from v1 to v2 that could impact popup menu performance. Check the Recent items virtual folder on that machine (C:\Users\[username>]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent - on Win7). Maybe there is a very large number of recent items that FP must scan completely in order to find the 5 most recent. You can clear this list with a command available when you right-click on the Recent Places folder in Explorer's left pane.
Update: v2.1 changed the way Recent folders are updated. They are now updated on demand, using the "Refresh" option in the "Recent folders" menu. This requires an additional click but it makes the popup menu more responsive regardless of the number of recent items to parse or the speed of the PC.
Hi Jean
First of all thank you for creating FoldersPopup and for distributing it freely.
In fact FoldersPopup is not Freeware but Free Open Source (Freeware usually refers to Free software where the source is not available http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeware)
I'm using version 2.0.2 under Windows XP Pro x86 SP3 en_US and although switching between folders works in any dialog, the "Add This Folder" option is always greyed out (unavailable). The only way to add new target folders is going to the Settings dialog and adding manually. Is this a known bug? Is it a Win XP limitation?
Kind regards,
Pedro
(from Faro, Portugal)
Hello Pedro,
You are right about freeware vs open source. But freeware is also used generally for "free" software.
Yes this is a WinXP limitation. I have not find a way to detect the current folder
under XP Explorer orin dialog box windows. This will be an additional benefit for you when you'll move to Win7 or 8.1 ;-)However, the "Add this folder" menu is available in Explorer windows, under Win XP and Win 7+.
Thank you for your comment.
Thank you for the quick answer.
I'm not switching to Win7 or Win8 on this machine (and it wouldn't make sense to stop using it just because Microsoft says so). This means I will have to look for another folder switch program.
Thanks!
That's odd. I'm using Folders Popup under the same OS as Pedro, but "Add this folder" isn't greyed out for me. But I'm using v. 1.2.7, so I guess I'll stick with that. I'm very happy with the functionality of the program as it is. Maybe I'll try v. 2 on my win 7 computer. :)
Even so, adding the folders from the settings menu isn't so terribly arduous. I personally wouldn't abandon the program for that reason.
Overall this is the best program of its type that I've found, even better than my old win XP standby, Folder Guide. Those two are the only ones I've found that are extremely simple and quick to use, and not bogged down with a lot of unnecessary complexities and additional functions. They just make navigation quick, and that's all that's wanted. (Especially in the nightmare environment of Vista and above, ugh.) And unlike Folder Guide, Folders Popup works in 64-bit systems!
Hi Marla
Thank you for the feedback
Where can I get version 1.2.7? Maybe there were some regressions?
"Add this folder" is never available in dialog boxes (where it is more logical/useful) but it is available in Explorer windows. I am currently using Anvir Task Manager Free which includes the FoldersPopup functionally and works correctly in dialog boxes under Windows XP. I would rather use a single task program like FP even if is an older build...
Thanks!
Thank you Marla for your good words.
I was incorrect in my previous reply (I've strikeout the error). Using FP (any FP version), you can always "Add this folder" in Explorer windows. This is only in dialog boxes under Win XP that this feature is unavailable. Sorry for the confusion. I reviewed my code but if whenever the "Add this folder" menu is grayed out in an Explorer window, let me know because this should not be.
BTW, you can vote for FP as an alternative to Folder Guide on AlternativeTo.net.
Very nice, clean and professional looking application. And NO eye candy.... NICE
As an SQL,VBx, AHK, etc... programmer, I can appreciate the work you have put into this project!
Nice layout, simple to use and does exactly what it is designed to do, without bells and whistles.
Would like to have? Well the obvious would be icons on the title bar of the supported dialogues and applications (like 4t Tray Minimizer) as well as mouse and keyboard short-cuts. Also restricted availability of the source code to "supporting" users
Well done Jean!
Thank you for your comments Richard. And you for your support. Appreciated :-)
> icons on the title bar of the supported and applications
Don't think I could do that in AHK environment.
> mouse and keyboard short-cuts
Yes. Could do that. Added to the wish list!
> availability of the source code to “supporting” users
As you mentioned below, source code is available for all users.
Could this be of help regarding Icon on Title bar?
http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/17877-titlebutton-031/
Interesting. I'll look at this. Thanks!
Oops, sorry just found source... Thanks
After upgrading to V2 I get this message on startup
http://www.pictureupload.de/originals/pictures/100614075413_errorfolderspopup.PNG
Error: Submenu does not exist.
I also can't start it
This is a bug in v2.0.2 when you turn Switch menu off in the options. Please download the current version (v2.0.3) that fixes this.
Thanks for reporting this.
Jean
thank you so much, now it's working just fine! :)
Good! Have a good day.
Hi Jean,
Are you aware of the fact that when you right-click FoldersPopup icon and choose "Suspend Hotkeys" or "Pause Script" the FoldersPopup icon changes to some AutoHotKey icon?
If you do, I suppose AutoHotKey doesn't allow you to change that?
Regards,
Geert
Hello Geert. Yes, I knew this. I think it can be changed but I never made it a priority. Is it annoying you?
Hi Jean,
Well it's not annoying once you know, but it could be confusing/misleading for users.
Since - after you've paused or suspended - you are searching for the well known icon and you don't find it anymore thinking "Hey, did I (by accident) exit FoldersPopup or what?".
So, if it is possible to avoid it, it would make FoldersPopup even more perfect ;-)
Did I already say it to you: Well done!
Geert
Got your point. Added to the list. And thank you for your comment :-)
I took a closer look at it. I'm using a command to frezze the tray icon (freeze = do not change when paused or suspended). It works when the script is running uncompiled (in my development environment). But it seems to have no effect when the script is compiled to an .exe file. This will need more research.
OK. Found why it was not applied to the compiled version. This will be fixed in v3.
Hi Jean,
I'd like to leave a 5 star review of your amazing program FolderPopup v2.1 on download.com but the latest known version there is 1.2.7! The world deserves to know that FolderPopup is better than ever. Before I leave a review do you think you could pop over and bring the listing up to date?
Cheers.
Thank you for your comment, Trent :-)
And thank you for posting your review on Download.com when it will be updated to v2.1. I sent the updated info on June 19th. They say it should be reviewed and online at most on June 24th. Please let me know when your comment is there!
It took more time than expected but the new version 2.1.1 of Folders Popup is now on Download.com:
http://download.cnet.com/FoldersPopup/3000-2344_4-76062382.html
Another remark, Jean:
In that same window where you can change the menu, it would maybe be a good idea to kind of "mark" the icons on which you can click by changing the cursor into a hand cursor when you hoover over the icons.
Reason: the first time I saw this screen, it was not clear to me that those icons were in fact buttons I could click on. (and I'm a software guy used to use different kinds of apps)
Another extra thing you could do: show a tooltip explaining its function whenever you hoover over those "action" icons/buttons.
Regards,
Geert
Good point. It requires some more advanced advanced techniques that I did not used before. But I found how to do it. This will be the next release. Thank you Geert.
Done in v2.2 :-)
Thanks a lot for this usefull software :)
May I do a request too. Well, is it possible, like folder, to have space for for day to day files ??
Hello faninatiako. Thank you for your comment. Yes, this is already in the wish-list and I added your "+1". I have no plan to do it for now. I'm trying to keep this app focussed on folders access. But I may change my mind :-)
Ok. So talking about folders, may be it is usefull :
Well, I see there are 2 ways to activate folder pop
- the desktop and the explorer, of course by pressing middle button mouse.
But when application is in full screen, we have to minimize (or alt + tab using) to access them. May be it is a good idea to get folder pop, by pressing middle button mouse on taskbar too.
Thanks
Hello faninatiako. There is another way to open the popup menu from any window: it is to hold the Shift key while you press the Middle mouse button. You can Shift-Middle mouse button on the task bar or anywhere.
The Middle mouse button alone will work only in Explorer windows, file dialog boxes and on the Desktop as you mentioned.
Regards.
:) Ok thanks for this tips, I'll do it.
Well it's a very good freeware, I'll talk it around.
Thanks a lot
Merci!
:) ah oui merci :)
This is very useful and has even greater potential. Thank you very much for creating the program. I like to point out a few shortcomings upon my brief review:
(1) The program seems to support only mouse devices that have a middle button and a wheel. Not every mouse has a middle button, or a wheel. I have two fine Logitech mouse devices, a marble, and a touchpad, neither has the middle button nor a wheel. So the limited choices of the various buttons in the "change hotkey" setup is not helpful. As a result, for a mouse that doesn't have a middle button or a wheel, hotkey mapping is either extremely difficult or not supported at all.
(2) The program does not support non-alphabetic language at all.. No, I'm not talking about the menu translation, which is a different thing. The menu currently supports several languages, which I think is pretty good already, especially considering that most computer users are comfortable with an English menu even if their first language is not English.
However, menu is one thing, the support of the operating system's folder names in different languages is a whole different thing. Currently, if the folder name has a non-alphabetic character (e.g., Chinese characters), the program does not recognize the folder at all. I tried the "Add this folder" feature to add a folder that has Chinese characters in it, and it simply did not work.
This shortcoming limits the usefulness of this program significantly.
(3) The installing process is unclear and confusing, especially for those who are not familiar with the concept. Most people expect the program to be installed into the computer's registry, and once installed, the program to be accessible in a traditional manner. My estimate is that less than 5% of PC users are knowledgeable and patient enough to first read an instruction in order to install a program. This would be a serious limitation to your market, though not problem for more advanced users.
I'd also add that creating a better looking icon doesn't hurt either :-)
Thank you for your comment nobodees.
Regarding mouse buttons, you could combine the left or right buttons with the Shift key (or any other modifier key). And for touchpad, some allow to configure a middle button equivalent. Here is an example http://cybernetnews.com/helpful-tip-middle-click-on-a-touchpad-laptop-mouse/. Look at options for your mouse pad in the Control Panel.
The remaining of your remarks leads me to remind you that this product is a freeware. This means that there is no localization or graphical department to whom I could refer your suggestions :-)
I first wrote FP for myself and, then, decided to take it to a level where I could make it available for others it could interest. Following the encouragement and suggestions of early users, and because programming is my favorite hobby, I took the app at an higher level than what I would have expect initially. I'm glad to see that the app gets five-stars reviews despite its shortcomings. And it is interesting to see comments from users that would expect the product to be raised to the world-class level commercial programs. But I won't make it my goal. I have a day job ;-) This being said, the program is open-source. Who knows, maybe, one day, other open source programmers build on this to take it further.
But stay tuned, I still have plans for future versions.
Bonjour,
je me permets pourtant quelques remarques "constructives" :
I translate for English readers:
> Would not it be more ergonomic allow adding folders by drag and drop directly?
Good idea. Doable without too much difficulty. Added to the list of suggestions.
> It would be interesting to allow adding files (not just folders): I did the test by typing the full name of a file, it works but this is not practical. For me it is an essential function.
Yes, it is a recurring demand rising in my priorities. I added your "+1" to this suggestion.
This being said, if you manually enter a file name in the "Add" dialog box, this will not always work. But I'll make sure all is well supported in a future release.
An update on this:
> Would not it be more ergonomic allow adding folders by drag and drop directly?
Done in v2.2.
> It would be interesting to allow adding files (not just folders): I did the test by typing the full name of a file, it works but this is not practical. For me it is an essential function.
Will be in v3 to be released in 2nd half of August.
I have on 2 PC windows 8.1 update and using firefox(all updated to latest version
using Dopus 11.1.b5
on 1 PC working then I download FP zip file
on second PC get "this dialogbox is not supported yet"
I have used same INI file on both
[Global]
... (edit: standard ini file content removed by JL) ...
What do I wrong?
Sven Åke
Hello Sven,
The window where you get the "not supported yet" message must me a dialog box that is not supported by default by FP. All you have to do is click "Add This Dialog Box to the supported list". The name of this dialog box will be added in the "Supported dialog box" in Settings. Save "Settings" and try again to open the popup menu in the same dialog box. It should work.
I have Added and save setting but still get
1)not supported 2)add 3)setting
so that was not helping
Sven Åke
Does it happen in a specific dialog box or in all dialog boxes and Windows Explorer windows?
I could send by email instructions on how to run FP in diagnostic mode. It would help me find what is happening.
Following an exchange by email, Sven got this to work. When you add a supported dialog box, you must keep the suggested text, or at least a part of it. I'll move this comment to the "closed case" section. Thanks for following up Sven.
Please read this two posts about Folders Popup from my blog:
Beta testers wanted for Folders Popup v3
Should Folders Popup maintain a list of supported dialog boxes?
For the new 2.2 version I read
* Support drag and drop to add favorite folders (nice and easy!)
Well, the first place where I tried to drag a folder to was the "Folder" text box (with the "Browse" button) in the "Add/Edit item" dialogs. (That's because +90% of the other applications have it at that place)
But I was "wrong".
It's not that I don't find it convenient where it is added currently, but maybe - to be in line with what users expect - you should consider to ALSO add it in the Folder text boxes.
I'll look at this. Should be feasible. Thanks for the comment.
I went in this direction (supporting drop files in the Add folder dialog box) but discovered that there was impacts on other "second level" dialog boxes sharing common code. Finally, I preferred to save trouble and leave it as it. Drop files will only work in the main "Settings" window, which is OK, I think. Thanks anyway, Geert, for this remark.
All right, it's up to you ;-) Not introducing trouble is important indeed. Thanks for considering suggestions.
Maybe you should consider to add some indication (a sentence beneath the drop area or a tooltip when you hoover over the drop area) to at least inform a user of the drag and drop possibility. Since it's handy and it would be a pity if 90% of the users don't use it becasue they don't know it.
Good idea. I'll do. Something line "You can drag and drop your favorites to this window" In Dutch, it would be?
In Dutch that would be: "Je kan je favoriete mappen naar dit venster slepen en neerzetten"
This will be added in the next bug fix release (v2.2.1) quite shortly. This release It will solve two submenu issues. First bug is solved. And I'm struggling against the second one...
Hi, I think I'm experiencing a weird bug since the version before 2.2: the middle mouse button doesn't work anymore inside Google Chrome. Pausing the script doesn't help, but "Suspend Hotkeys" gives me back the MMB functionality.
Cheers.
Hello Sebastián. Thanks for reporting this.
It has been reported here earlier that FP interfere with middle mouse button in “drag and drop” actions in some specialised program (a CAD program if I remember well). The workaround was to select another keyboard/button combination than Middle mouse button in “Settings, Options”. But if it affect Chrome, this could affect more people.
I could not reproduce it myself using Chrome (v35). Just to make sure this is new to v2, could you check with an earlier version of FP? I changed nothing in v2 related to hotkeys. You can download v1.2.7 here: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/ahk/folderspopup/folderspopup-1_2_7.zip .
Thanks again.
Hi Jean,
I did some tests with v.1.2.7 and now I get the same problem with the MMB. This didn't happen before -I suppose the problem must be on my end, though I can't pinpoint any system change behind it. Furthermore, I discovered that when folderspopup is running I lose the MMB functionality in Firefox, IE, and other software too (like notepad++ -I'm running the latest version of all of these). Selecting a keyboard/button combination does indeed solve the issue.
Anyway, it's not a big deal, specially with the workaround, and I thank you for all of your work.
Cheers!
Hi,
A nice tool making life a bit easier ;-) Thanks for the effort you put into it!
While I am at it, I have two observations to report with the Folders Popup shortcut key manager:
1.
Somehow I managed to get the 'Settings window' shortcut field to be empty (read: blank) (don't ask me how! :-) because I did not want a shortcut for that. However, with the field being blank, I was not able to enter a '$' character in any program anymore (on my keyboard I need to press the shift key + the '4'/'$' key) but instead the 'Settings window' popped-up unexpectedly...
2.
Related to my wish to disable the shortcut for the 'Settings windows', I am not able to either 'clear the field' or 'set it to None'. When I try to do so, I get another (modal) popup reporting: 'No key or Mouse Button specified. The existing "SettingsHotkey" hotkey is unchanged'
Kind regards,
Ton van Vliet.
Thank you, Ton, for your comment and for your support :-)
Oh... Not convenient! It should not be possible to leave the hotkey fields empty (unless you edit the ini file directly). Actually, FP does not allow "none" as hotkey. I did some work in that direction working on an earlier version and found issues that made me prefer to disallow "no hotkey" at that time. I could revisit this issue now that you are asking it (I don't remember it has been requested by a user previously). Would you explain why you prefer to disable some hotkeys?
* There was a bug with the comment form - Ton sent it to me this reply by email *
De rien et merci à toi!
Don't spend too much time on it. My workaround is to simply assign some weird key combination (like ctrl+shift+alt+win+somekey) to the ones I don't want enabled (to prevent conflicts with already existing keyboard shortcuts)
I just wonder then, why the option 'none' appears in the Keyboard text-field automagically when one deletes the currently assigned character by pressing backspace (with the cursor in that field) and only when saving the setting one is informed that it is not a valid entry.
Regards,
Ton.
> Don't spend too much time on it. My workaround is to simply assign some weird key combination (like ctrl+shift+alt+win+somekey) to the ones I don't want enabled (to prevent conflicts with already existing keyboard shortcuts)
Noted. But this is something I should look at, one of these days.
> I just wonder then, why the option 'none' appears in the Keyboard text-field automagically when one deletes the currently assigned character by pressing backspace (with the cursor in that field) and only when saving the setting one is informed that it is not a valid entry.
This is because I do not control the behavior of this field. This field is component of my development environment. I receive its content only after the user press "Save". I can do nothing about this.
Bonjour Jean,
Thank you for your tool discovered today on Gratilog.net which seems very good : simple, and efficient.
For several years, I'm using a very similar tool, FolderMenu (http://foldermenu.sourceforge.net/), which works fine in XP, but has a lot of bugs in Win7. So I'll try to replace it by FoldersPopup...
I have a question : I do not understand what means the "Pause script" menu ? I tried to check it, without noticing any change in behaviour... Strange...
Would be interrested to get explanation.
Regards
Bonjour Laurent. Merci pour votre commentaire.
"Suspend Hotkeys", "Pause Script" and "Exit" are system menu present by default in the Tray menu in my development environment. "Suspend Hotkeys" disables the middle mouse button or any other hotkey assigned by Folders Popup. "Pause Script" is interrupting the execution of the current thread of FP but it does not prevent from starting a new thread by pressing a hotkey again. In fact, there is not real use of this menu in FP. It is there only because it comes bundled with the "Suspend" and "Exit" menu. I could remove both menu. But, since "Suspend" and "Exit" can be useful in some situation, I kept both 3 menus.
But you made me think that I can remove the "bundled" system menus and recreate only the "Suspend" and "Exit" menu myself. This will require only a few lines of code to reproduce their behavior. That's what I'll do in v3.0. Thanks for making me thinking about it :-)
>> I can remove the “bundled” system menus and recreate only the “Suspend” and “Exit” menu myself.
Seems a good thing to me.
This will be in v3 to be released in the 2nd half of August.
PS: I discovered Folder Menu some time after I started this project (this project is an evolution based on a the script "DirMenu" published in AutoHotkey forum). You are right about its current state. It was designed under WinXP and, to my knowledge, is not supported under Win7. BTW, Folders Popup will also have icons in v3.0 ;-)
Hi Jean, in version 2.2 of folder popup I am no longer able to move entries between top and bottom. Is this a known problem?
Thanks,
arnoud
I can move around menu items fine in FP v2.2 (running on Windows 7 Professional SP1)
Hello Arnoud. Good to see you back. Have you tried the up/down arrows on the left side of the "Settings" window? Before they were named "Up" and "Down" but I replaced them with graphical buttons.
I don't have any buttons on the left side..?
The only buttons in my Settings window are on the right side: add, edit, remove.
Can I send you a screenshot?
Yes, please. And you can compare with this this screenshot: http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/30-settings.png
I received your screenshot by email. Please, make sure FP is running in a folder where it can create subfolders. Button images are created in a temporary "_temp" folder located under the folder where FP is called.
Also, normally FP should not accept to run directly from the zip file. But if it is the case make sure you extracted FP from its sip file before running it.
Yes I did (from the first version), it runs in C:\Program Files\FolersPopup (which I created) and I run Windows in administrator mode. Strange right?
Yes, strange. While FP is running, do you see a temporary subfolder named "_temp"?
I fixed it! I just exited FP, and then ran it again. After that, it asked to upgrade from v.2.1 (which is strange as I already did earlier)..
Now, I do have the buttons.
Thanks anyway :)

If you download the current version, you should have v2.2.1. Happy to see it works now :-)
Yes, I do. May be I made a mistake earlier. Thanks!

In the settings window of FP there's a "button" to order your menu items (by name, ascending).
a. When you press that button when you have delimiters (-------------) in your menu, the result is obviously not what you want (all delimiters at te top)
Shouldn't you disable that button whenever a delimiter is used?
Or, if you keep it enabled, shouldn't it be better to order the menu items between two delimiters?
b. Don't you need another button that does descending ordering?
E.g. If I start with this menu structure:
Zzzz Menu item
Dddd Menu item
Aaaa Menu item
--------------
Rrrr Menu item
Eeee Menu item
--------------
Yyyy Menu item
Bbbb Menu item
what you currently get is:
--------------
--------------
Aaaa Menu item
Bbbb Menu item
Dddd Menu item
Eeee Menu item
Rrrr Menu item
Yyyy Menu item
Zzzz Menu item
Wouldn't this be more what you want:
Aaaa Menu item
Dddd Menu item
Zzzz Menu item
--------------
Eeee Menu item
Rrrr Menu item
--------------
Bbbb Menu item
Yyyy Menu item
Another thing: when a user selects a delimiter in the list of menu items, I would disable the "Edit" button.
Since allowing the user to fiddle with the menu item name and/or folder name can lead to all kind of errors.
PS. I must admit, that - for me - I don't need that button since I can order them myself using the up/down buttons.
Hello Geert. I got your point. I added the sort button as a goodies because it was a quick hit (short development time). As you said, this is already easy to sort folders manually.
I would not invest much time on this feature. But I could show an alert box if I detect that there are separators in the current menu. Would it do the job in your view?
>> I would not invest much time on this feature.
In that case... Is it really needed?
>> I could show an alert box if I detect that there are separators in the current menu.
Telling what?
If you do the effort to detect that there are separators, I would then - based on that information - disable the sort button. Because there's really no one who wants those separators on top.
And when the user selects a separator, disable the Edit button. Because when you have eg. two separators and edit one by prefixing its name with a character, then you can never change it back to the original because "The name '------------' is already used in this menu. Please, choose a new name." You have to remove it and add it again.
> In that case… Is it really needed?
If someone think the sort button should not be removed, please express yourself :-)
> when the user selects a separator, disable the Edit button
Done in v3. Thanks for you "continuous improvement" involvement :-)
Bonjour,
Dommage:
hi-
WE use a cloud drive at work (mapped to a local drive letter). Periodically the mapping is lost (it's a pain, but I have no options to change cloud providers at this time). When this happens and I run FoldersPopup I get an AHK error message which doesn't tell me much about why it is failing. Is there a way to get a cleaner error message like "location not found"?
thanks
Hello Steve. Yes. This is in v3 currently at the beginning of beta test phase (see http://code.jeanlalonde.ca/beta-testers-wanted-for-folders-popup-v3/). you should not see an error message with lines of code as you have in v2. Thanks for the comment.
In v3, when builbing the menu at start-up time, I'm checking if favorite folder or file (new in v3) exists before enabling its entry in the menu. If they do not, I disable the menu. Because network drives can be unavailable when FP is launched (if user is not authenticated or if network failure), I do not check if network favorites exist at start-up and always make their menu entry available. If the favorite is still not there if user select it in the popup menu, then I show an error message "favorite unavailable".
Up to now, I was relying on the first chars of the path ("\\", or "http://" or "https://" in some case) to detect if a favorite is on a network drive. You message remembers me that network drives (or cloud drives) do not necessarily have a path starting the "\\" (...). They can be mapped to a drive letter. Then, I have no way to distinguish between local and network favorites. I'll have to redesign this portion of code. Maybe abandon checking if file exist.
Bonjour,
Line#
---> 1882: Run,%strLocation%

Jean-Philippe said "Thank you for your application that I use quite often. The only problem I encounter is that it does not support network directories requiring authentication. This works if you previously authenticated but it produces an error otherwise. During the operation, FoldersPopup does not offer authentication screen. It is for me a real brake in use. Can you think of taking care of this problem."
Me: "I meet the same situation at my office. I've done a little research to take care of that but I have not found. This may be useful to you, I have my little trick: two shortcuts in the File Explorer pointing to the root of the 2 servers that I use regularly. I y authenticates the beginning of the day. On the other hand, in my experience, if you go to a network with Popup Folders folder from a dialog box, you will receive an authentication request properly. That being said, I added your request to the wish-list. Also, in v3 (to be released by the end of summer), there will be a "cleaner" message in case of failure of access to the file (or document they will be supported in the v3).
Hi Jean!
I would like to know if it is possibly, and how
to edit thee Folder: Specials Folders
Best Regards
Hello Mario.
No this is not possible actually. But I have this on my wish-list. What kind on change would you like to do?
